hI  i asked the same question on competitor .The expert there said diff.XL and XLII was XL quit makeing them about 5 years ago. They were made in japan XLII was made in china. Said both were decent scopes. I just bought and XL as a kit with tripod scope cover and case. I am very well pleased with it. I just bought a bushnell space master II and also like it very well. Have not had chance to compare them side by side only have one tripod but i will.

My goodness, grammar must be an elective class in school nowadays.  Big Grin

Are you sure about the XL II being made in China?  I would be rather surprised, if this were true.  Anything's possible though...

If it is true, that represents a good little tidbit of knowledge about which Nikon certainly has not been overly forthcoming.  I bet it would cause quite a few potential buyers to second-guess their purchase.

I do know however, that the XLII is not discontinued.  It is still readily available at many retailers, including SWFA.

No harm, no foul.

I would, however, like to see some independent confirmation of the assertion that the XLII is made in China.  That would be, I would think, quite the public relations problem, if the optics market were to find that it was true and that Nikon had neither been up front about it, nor had they lowered the price to account for the Chinese label.

One of the reasons I have a hard time believing this assertion is that the Nikon Spotter XL line and the 60mm Bushnell Elite line (along with a couple of others) are essentially the same spotting scope; made by the same manufacturer, on the same assembly lines, with many of the same parts.  In fact, Nikon doesn't physically make them at all.  So, simply moving this over to China, I would imagine, would be a bit more difficult than one would think.
