After much deliberation and countless hours reading threads in this forum, i have whittled the scope choice for my 7mm-08 to a Nikon.  I am in the $350-$500 range.  I have the following scopes on my short list:  Nikon buckmaster 6-18x40, nikon monarch 5-20x44, 4-16-42, 4-16x50.

I am lookin for a decent hunting / varmit rig with target turrets .

Any information or past experiences would be greatly appreciated.

I'd go with the Nikon 4x16x42 or 50.  The 42 will weigh less and be less bulky than the 50.  On a small gun which most 7mm08's are a 50 can overwhelm the gun.

Optically, is there a substanital difference between the 42mm and the 50mm?

The 50 will have a slightly larger exit pupil allowing the use of a higher power in low light.  Basically you'll be able to use 9 or 10 power in low light with the 50 versus 7 or 8 power with 42.  Other than that there shouldn't be any discernable difference.
