Originally I planned on buying a varmint rifle.  But an opportunity came up to buy a light weight hunting rifle for a good price.  So the scope I just bought, a Nikon 5.5-16.5x44 Monarch UCC, now seems like an odd choice.  I've been looking at scopes to exchange.  But the Nikon 3-12x42 weighs just .2 ounces less than the 5.5-16.5x.  Hardly seems worth the trouble to send in for the exchange.  The 4-12x40  is 1.2 ounces less but again I'm not sure it's worth the trouble of exchange.  The only closeout 3-9x40 has the BDC reticle which I don't like.

I'm just really confused what I should do?  Which of the closeout Nikons would you put on a 6 pound hunting rifle?

Thanks for the help.

the BDC is not as obnoxious as you would think - what kind of reticle is your choice?

I'd prefer the standard nikkoplex(sp?).  Part of me says just to buy the 3-9.  But I think it would always bug me if I got the BDC.

I would be more concerned about the magnification than the wieght...... I would rather have a 3-12 or 4-12 for a hunting rig.  Why not keep the one you have for the future and get a 3-9 for this gun.  There are other good scopes out there, like the Sightron II 3-9..... I think its about $199.00.  Don't think you need a scope for a hunting rig ready to go right now.... hunting season is a ways off and you could save up for it... might not find a better deal on the Nikon you have again...... just a thought!

Thanks for the advice.  The hunting rifle will be last purchase for a while and I can't afford two scopes right now.  I'm hunting pigs and you can hunt them year round in my state .

The reason I mentioned the weight.  The scopes are pretty close in power at the low end with a bigger difference at the higher end.  But the weight of all three scopes are pretty close.  So it seems like it might not be worth the trouble to exchange for a closeout nikon.

Maybe I'll have to bite the bullet and buy the right scope for the rifle, like the sightron 3-9.  Even if it is full price.

how about a 2-7, a bit smaller and a nice match for a light weight rifle.

Bull Barrels are for Varmint Hunting so 14X is a nice mag. A hunting rifle for whitetail deer is a special purpose weapon. Here's my reasoning. If your going to stalk whitetail a six pound rifle with a 12 oz scope is an excellent choice. If you going to ambush hunt, sit in a stand and wait for the smart than humans buck, you need a 6 power scope max. with a illuminated dot, cross-hair or circle. The big and best deer are going to lay low and only show early or late light. Not unless your on one of the paid Texas hunts where they got so many big bucks they chase each other around the living room.

Just wanted to give you guys an update.  Thanks for your advice.  Ended up returning the monarch and just ordered a 4200 3-9x40.  It was a coin flip between that or the zeiss conquest.
