I plan on purchasing a Nikon Monarch 4x16x50 with the BDC reticle and will be mounting it on a 300 WSM Tikka T3.  I was just curious how accurate the reticle markings were for this rifle for the 200, 300, 400, and 500 markings.  Also please clarify that the rifle should be zero'd @ 100 yds correct.  Any comments would be appreciated.Clown

The answer is more complex than you might think because there are several different weight bullets which can be shot out of a 300 WSM.  The Nikon BDC reticles show that with magnum calibers like 300WSM the zero should be 200 yds and the circles below should approximate each hundred yards past that. Now what they neglect to tell you is that a BCD reticle only works at the HIGHEST POWER in this case 16x. This makes the 4-16 rather a less desirable scope than a lower power if you stalk game however if you shoot from a fixed position and planned on 16x which wont be very bright in low light due to the small exit eye pupil (amount of light that gets to your eye) (50divided by 16 gives 3.125mm exit eye pupil ---- 7mm being perfect 5mm being fairly useable in low light). I would recommend a different approach to targeting at known distances which will be more accurate. I'll suggest a similar power scope but with true target knobs:

  • Matte
  • Duplex
  • 30mm
  • Long Range
  • Side Focus
  • Target Knobs
SWFA: $674.95
And I will suggest changing the knobs to Kenton Long Range Hunter style knobs: which will be made for the exact cartridge you select to use.  I would probably select the 180 gr Barnes TSX Federal ammo but your call.
Now undoubtedly someone will chime in shortly and tell how this scope is not the worlds best glass and it isnt but it may be the worlds most deadly combination in this price range, and the feel of these target knobs is superior to most plus they have protective caps which I think would be preferable on a hunting gun.  This system is on target at any power.
