a Nikon Monarch 4-12x40 AO became available to me for 200 dollars from a friend before he sells it for more online. it's a two year old scope, but doesn't even have ring marks, it looks brand new. I haven't seen through a monarch before, however, and he's in another state so i can't see it without buying it. He mounted it once and fired only a couple times, then sold the gun he was using it on so it's in prime condition.

I was wondering what your experiences with this scope are. It's sold for about 100-150 more everywhere i look, but I wanted to know if you guys think this is a good scope w/smooth optics etc. I'm on a budget here, and my options are buy this slightly used monarch or a new prohunter master series and have some money left over that i could definately use on ammunition and the like. Any help would be great! thanks!

Monarch usually go for about 350 to 400 in the model 4x12. You have it confused for another. $200 is a fair deal but not a real good deal.

I have one and they are fine scopes.  That seems a pretty good price to me.  Only thing I know to watch out for is that this particular Monarch has short spacing for the rings.  I have seen some long action (30-06 for instance) bolt guns with rings just a little too far apart to fit the 4-12.  Of course if that isn't a problem, the shorter scope is rather handy sized.

The Master Prohunter isn't even fully multicoated, so I can't see going with that over a Monarch.  Monarch's have good glass and coatings.  Good internals.  One of the better deals in scopes.
