Would like to know what the difference is between these scope in terms of glass.  I can already tell the differences in  turret covers.  I'm going to be mounting one of these to a Browning BLR 7mm-08 20" barrel.  Both offer the 2.5-10x magnification.

 The Prostaff 5 is $279,

 the Monarch 3 is $399

I hunt in thick woods with a maximum range of 100 yards mostly, but on occasion hunt at other locations where my distance may stretch to 300 yards max.  Interested in getting a BDC reticle also.  Just wondering if the price difference is worth it.  I am really interested in one of these scopes, because of the BDC app and the use of 1" tubes.  This scope will be mounted on a rifle I might take hunting once or twice a year, not my main rifle, but have been wanting to get it into the rotation.  I have a Vortex HS scope already and a SS scope on another rifle.  I don't want to get into these price ranges since I will not be using this rifle a lot. Thanks for the insight.

The generally accepted rule is to buy the best quality glass that you can afford... it trumps magnification. In this instance, the Monarch wins the duel BUT each would get the job done under your described scenario. I guess it comes down to whether or not you want to spend the extra cash.

Welcome to Optics Talk.

The Monarch is the top shelf Nikon currently and the Prostaff is the entry level scope.
I would get the Monarch for serious big game hunting because it will perform better in low light than the Prostaff.

Also, I would forgo the BDC reticle and get a Niko Plex or heavier reticle.

In thick woods to me means less light. And this is where the better glass of the Monarch will make a difference.

I would also consider this one.  http://swfa.com/Meopta-3-9x42-Meopro-Rifle-Scope-P45967.aspx

It has great glass that will do you well in low light.
