I am looking at this scope for a Ruger #1 in 45-70. Is this scope made
in Japan by Nikon or some where else, and possibly by a contractor?
This scope has the eye relief and size I am looking for. It is similar
in this regard to the Leupold 2.5-8 at a much better price.

I just found this: "The Gale McMillian archives has a couple of contradictions and out and out untruths in it. In statement he points out how no company polishes their lenses. Further down he talks about Burris grinding their own lenses. Other than the new FFIIs, the glass in all other Burris scopes comes from Schott in PA. This was verified by Schott. Also, Nikon has a factory in Thailand that was made specifically for Monarch scope manufacturing."
ranburr or:
"As it is, most scopes that I consider to be the best for the money are either made in Japan or have have glass produced in Japan, but assembly done in US:
Koshkin Is this a Nikon plant or a contractor? It appears from searching, that amongst the bigger companies, Leupold, Burris and some of the Euro companies are the only manufacturers of their own equipment. I know the Japanese Bushnell contractor for the 4200's make good scopes but they are too big with too little eye relief. The regulars on this site; Koshkin, Ur...friend, Cheaptrick, ranburr, Roy Finn, mwyates, the moderators and others have really turned looking for a scope into something of a chore. You guys have a lot of info that can't be found anywhere. Maybe I'll just stick with what has worked for me, V-III and Kahles Helia. Even these have worked; my largest white tail and largest mulie were with a twenty year old 4X FF. The mulie was at over 300 yards, day light, though. Biggest black bear was with an old Bausch and Lomb 4X that I compared with a Zeiss 4X at the time. Anyways, I was hoping to save a little money by buying something different form SWFA or the Sample List. Here's why, the Ruger 45-70 is spotless and ran me $400. Couldn't pass and the boss doesn't know, yet. Same needs to go for the scope. Thanks for the forum time |

Thank you!!
Most of us you mentioned use what has worked for us. If you like the VXIII and the Kahles, then by all means continue to use them.
The world of optics has gotten better and better. Theres a ton of really good scopes out these days. It is maddening trying to sort out all the different options. I concur.
I thought the Monarchs were made in the PI..... (Philippines) |

I think the current Monarch UCC scopes are made in Phillipines or in Thailand (I think Nikon has factories in both places, and I am not sue what is made where). Monarch Gold scopes are still made in Japan, to the best of my knowledge.

Sounds like were on the right track as 45-70 is usually an under 150 yard rifle. I would like to add this that you need to consider how much light the optic will gather. I might opt for a Nikon Monarch fixed 4x40 which is a very bright scope in low light with 10mm exit eye pupil size. One other option I really like is Nikon Monarch Gold 1.5-6x42 with a 7mm exit eye pupil size and I think worth the more money if you are hunting anything that might be dangerous.

Urimaginaryfrnd, you might have something there with the 1.5-6, as there is one for an attractive price on the Sample List. I am a little concerned about the size, but it is shorter than the 4X. This call has me thinking about the 1.1-4x24 Kahles that Chris likes. I was going to put that on my .375 H&H M700. See what you guys do...... |
