They are definitely on par with the rest of the alpha glass.  They are short and fat feeling, but the optics are great.  Whether they are worth the coin is sort of up to you to decide.

If I was going to spend that much on a binocular, my choice would be the Steiner Peregrine XP in 8x44.  When you get to that level of binocular you are really nit picking over image differences.  What one will resolve, they all will.  There are some image differences that some people view as profound.  Some. like me can live with any of them.  I would pick the Steiner just because it feels best to me and for whatever reason, the left diopter setup focuses a bit better for my eyes, and the overall balance when I have it to my eyes appeals to me.  The EDG would be my last choice because it feels to short and fat for my taste when I have it in my hands.  The optics have nothing to do with it, it's just my preference.  My second choice is the Swarovski EL, again from an ergonomic standpoint.  Zeiss will typically have the brightest appearing image, the Leica may look to have the best pure color resolution, etc.  Point is, when you are going to spend that amount, look at as many as you can.  Whichever one you like, I'd tell you to buy that one.  They are all superbly constructed quality optics.

The EDG comments are from limited looking.  The fact I did not like the way they handled turned me off pretty quick, especially since they seemed to me to offer no great optical improvement over othe expensive glass.  The fact the Steiner's balanced well and felt right to me was also apparent pretty quick.  I could like a Swaro EL just about as well.

I hope Nikon fixed the focus wheel design in the first demo batch. It was so loose that you will get confused whether you are adjusting focus or diopter. Except of that, the optics is great.
