I am trying to decide on a new scope for my savage 308, I have been looking at the Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x40sf.  I will use the scope for shooting deer and the occasional coyote out to a few hundred yards and as close as fifty or less.  Is the scope to high powered for closer up shots (20-50 yards) and is it good in low light conditions? what would be other options around 300 dollars that have side focus and 40mm lens?

Thanks

Took my wife shopping for scopes and never showed her the price until she picked three she liked out of 10 scopes.

Swaro Z5
Zeiss Conquest
Nikon Buckmaster

This is the order she picked them and after I showed her the price she went with the Buckmaster because it focused within 20ft clearly at more than half the price.

At that price range for a variable with a side focus, the Nikon is gonna be hard to beat. If you willing to give up the side focus you might be able to get a AO with better glass for a similar price.

Parallax adjustment is not critical thing if your hunting deer or coyote out to 2-300 yards. parallax error wont be much on a scope of less than 10x at that range, proper/repeatable eye placement can take it out.
if your willing to shell out an extra $100, id go with http://swfa.com/Zeiss-3-9x40-Conquest-Rifle-Scope-P608.aspx You will get better low light performance and the better glass of the zeiss will negate the extra magnifcation of the nikon.   But if you just have to have side focus for $300. stick with the nikon.

In your price range with those requirements I don't know of another I'd use.

The only reson I think the side focus would be useful is if I decide to start shooting longer shots, I am attemping to build some sort of inexpensive "beanfield rifle" and don't want to start off shooting at longer range then I can handle.  I plan on shooting longer distances past 300 yards distances but only at paper targets at first.

IT will be a good scope to learn on but you may run into problem going to far because of the limited elevation travel that nikon's have.

At 4.5 X on the low end, most agree that is ok for fairly close shots also. Heck, many folks use a straight 4X (myself included) that does not pose apparent problems at close range. Of course, a smaller power on the low end (say 2X for example) will usually have a wider FOV which is certainly beneficial at short ranges. I believe I'd just get the Buckmaster and go for it...chances are you will be just fine.

I've mainly used 3-9x40 in the past and unless I was shooting over a hundred yards or i was punching paper the zoom stayed between 3x and 6x.

I have had that very scope and liked it a lot. That scope started my Nikon lover affair. Wished many times that I would have kept it.
