I am looking at a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x40 Mil Dot scope and have a few questions regarding the reticle.

Does the scope have to be on 10x for the Mil Dot spacing to work properly or is it designed to work at 14x?

Any information would be appreciated. Thanks

Do you have the paperwork that came with the scope?  Should be listed there.  Don't have that particular scope so I can't say.

Most of the Nikons mil at 12x, but it's something like 3.12 inch per hundred yds. at 14, and that's where i'd "mil" myself.

Nikon's catalog is very helpful for this purpose--they have an excellent reticle spec. pg.

You are correct that most scopes require 10x for the mil dot reticle to be calibrated properly. However, check yours closely as
Nikon does redden the number of the proper magnification to use.

Nikon Buckmasters 4.5-14 and 6.5-18 are both accurate at 12x like sscoyote states.

When it comes to reticles--the Tech Spec pg. of the catalogs and a yardstick r the shooter's best friends. Believe me--i learned this the hard way. Here's the 6-18x Nikon BM mil-dot--

I bet that 4.5-14 looks very similar. According to the catalog the "mil"-spacing also becomes 3.12 IPHY between dots and the dot diameter is 0.61 IPHY @14x. Bushnell reddens theirs, which is also 12x (i think).
