I was just wondering if this scope was adequate enough for 200-yard target shots and white tailed hunting. I'm reluctant to jump to the Nikon BM 4.5-16 because of the considerable jump in price (approx $80). Or is it really worth it pay the extra money for increased magnification? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

3-9 is more than adequate for 200 yard whitetail.  If you have plans to possibly use that gun for varmint / target or possibly take it out west for antelope or something at a later date it would be worth up grading to the 4.5-14.  You also gain the adjustable objective in addition to the extra 5 high end powers.
