Other than the chassis construction, are there any differences between these models? Specifically, are either fully multi-coated?

If it ain't accurate at long distance, the fact that it is flat shooting is irrelevant.

Nikon's literature "2005 Birding and Sport Optics" does not exactly give a direct answer to your question. The Monarch ATB is listed as having "full multicoated lenses," as well as Eco-Glass optics, but the Action series does not get a similarly detailed description. The introductory paragraphs in the the brochure state that "All [of the ATB series]... feature Nikon's renowned multicoated optics..." (which is not exactly correct as pointed out above in relation to the Monarch series.) So, you can at least assume they are multicoated, though probably not fully-multicoated. |

What if the hokey pokey really is what it's all about?

Nikon's website mentions multicoated but not fully-multicoated for both the Action and Action EX series of bins.

I don't own the 10x50's, but what I do own is a pair of the 8x40 Action EXtreme and the 7x35 Actions.
For me, there's no comparison in the Action EX and the Action series. The EXtreme's offer a dramatically sharper center image with better color rendition and a pretty crisp image across 90% of the viewing field. The 7x35 Actions aren't altogether that crisp in the middle and get very fuzzy toward the edges. In fact, the Action series--if you scan the horizon long enough through them--will make you down right dizzy. The Action EX eye cups have well placed click stops as you twist them up that make it easy to remember the right setting for your eyes--especially if you wear glasses. The Action EX have a better, firmer focusing knob and seem to be heavier than the Actions--the rubber's thicker and you get the feeling that you could drop them from a fair height without damaging them. The image through my 8x40's is at the very least as good and, for my money, much sharper with better color than my cousin's 8x40 Monarchs. I like the Action Extremes and keep them near the back door for incidental opportunities that present themselves--I use them several times a week. I keep the 7x35 Actions as 'loaners' when I go on bird walks with newbies. I'd rate the Action Extremes on par with the Pentax PCF series, the Olympus EXPS1 (I have a pair of 10x42's that they compare very favorably with), and the Minolta Activa W's (although the Activa's are a better value and much lighter weight). Just my two cents. |

I bought the Action Extreme 10X50. To say that I am pleased is an
understatement. Very sharp and crisp. So much so that it
seems to "jump out at you". Significantly better than my Burris
Fulfield 10X50's, even in low light.
