I have a Nikon 4x32 Prostaff rimfire classic that I would like to mount on a new 30-30.  I hunt in thick timber so my shots are always less than 100 yards.  The 4x32 looks identicle to the ProStaff 3-9x40 that is marketed as a centerfire scope except for the adustment knob.  The only specification difference is that the parallax is set to 50 yards on the 4x32 and 100 yards on the ProStaff 3-9x40.  What do you think?

I say go with the 4X. The parallax setting will be more fit for the ranges you will be working with. If your ever think you will go outside the woods, and shoot further than 100 yards. I would then get the variable 3-9. In deep cover with shots constantly less than 100 yards the 4X will be perfect.

If you are worried about parallax on ranges under 100 yards, you must be hunting hummingbirds.  For a target the size of a deer, I've yet to see a scope with enough parallax at that range to make a difference.

ps.  I second recommendation on the 4X.

I concur. The 4X will be all you need for your 30-30.
