I just purchased a Howa/Hogue combo package in 300 Win Mag. The scope that came with it is a Nikko/Stirling Night Eater, 3-10X42. I dont know anything about this brand. Will it hold up to the recoil of the 300 Mag? Is it worth fooling with?

Any comments on this scope, good or bad, would be appreciated.

I had a 1.5-6 Nikko Nighteater on my 375H&H for some time.

It worked fine, but the 30mm tube was a PITA on the Ruger #1 and it went in favour of a 1-4 Leupold.  The 375H&H did not beat it to death, I don't think your 300 will either.

Like most cheap scopes they are not a terribly good, particularly at high magnification.  It may need to be replaced because you want better, but it will work in the meantime if you take reasonable care of it.

I got a 3-10x42 night eater on my howa 7mag and it has held up to the recoil just fine. It is brighter than my leupold fxIII but not as crisp around the edges. Its better then the 4200 elite. I had the 2.5-10X40 fire fly and might as well get down at least 30 min before dark with it. My buddy has the 6500 elite and i wouldnt have it either. The bushnell would be a down grade, i would go with nikon, burris, or weaver. If u want to splurge go with a meopta. You wont regret it.

Thank you all for your comments, I think I'll give the Nikon a look as lonnie suggests.
