I just purchased a new Sako TRG 22 in 308 caliber and will be obtaining a new tactical scope for it - I have narrowed down my choices to a Leupold Mark IV LR/T 8.5x25x50 or a Nightforce NXS 5.5x22x50.  I will be using it mostly for benchrest factory class competition i.e., varmint shoots out to 400 and some 600 yard benchrest - no tactical type matches.  My question is - is the Nightforce worth the extra 300 to 400 dollars?  I have spent hours researching this on the net and so far no clearcut answer - obviously I am not going to be hard on the scope - my primary concerns are glass clarity (mirage always an issue at longer ranges) and consistent "clicks" i.e., repeatability of clicking up and down since I shoot at different distances.

Opinions are appreciated by folks who have used/owned both.

Thanks

Are you set on those two?  The SWFA SS 5-20x50 would be a good fit as well

Even for the limited scenario you described I can't see where an 8.5-25 would be an enjoyable magnification range. So the Leupold would not be on my list. The NF...well the glass won't be as good as the SS 5-20 so the extra 12.5% magnification won't do much good, especially for the price difference. In fact, with serious mirage it could be a detriment to have to crank that scope all the way up while the other might allow you the resolution to shoot at 15X. The price of the non-illum SS 5-20 makes it a great deal ($1299).

the glass of the SS is far better than the leupold, i have a mk4 lr/t, and honestly, i love it. but the glass is limiting compared to the SS. i can see clear plastic bottles at 750 pretty easy. and e types at 1500.

I'd go with the Super Sniper 5-20x50 non illuminated.  It will save you lots of money compared to the the other two choices.  I have a Leu Mk4 8.5-25x40 and two of the SS 5-20 scopes and I have looked at the NF but the glass in the NF really has not been anything special when you compare it to say something like a Bushnell 4200 or a Zeiss Conquest where the SS is at least as good or better than those.  I do like certain features of the NF but it is no where near the value of the SS dollar for dollar.

I would have to say NF lots ahead of Leupold.

I would also have to say SS 5-20 a little ahead of NF.

The Night Force is tried and trued the Leupold IV is not quite as good while still highly used and toted it has issues.

I would have to state even though it is newer to the market the internals on the 5-20 are just superbly machined and no one has a question as to if it will hold up overtime.

I have a 5-20 I have a close to 8,000 rounds through.  .338LM, 300WM, 7mmMag, 30-378WBY, and some regular old .308 win...

I have owned both scopes mentioned.

Well I have the 8.5-25x50 Leupold and the SS 5-20x50.  I really prefer 5x or 6x on the low end to 8.5x and other than that the Mil Quad reticle combined with 1/10 mil clicks makes for a nice system.

I chose the NF over the Mark IV mainly because of the NF MOA reticle.  I have shot .308 well beyond 1000 yards with no issues, the clicks are solid and precise.  Very happy with it.  Really though, either sounds like it will work for you.

NF also for durability and resale. I would look hard at the new sightrons siii that swfa has in 6-24x for price, glass and repeatable internals.
