I want to hog hunt at night in southeast texas. The typical terrain is thickly wooded with little to no light, moonlight or starlight. If you use a cheap gen 1 nv scope with a IR illuminator, how would it compare to say a ATN MARS 4x? I don't mind spending the money for a decent gen 2 device, but from what I read there still needs to be some ambient light or you need an IR illuminator.

The problem with thick brush is that the stuff between you and the animal bounces back the light from the illuminator, it is not fun.

Another option is the laser designator, it is a flashlight with a laser light source, very focused, less scatter back toward the shooter.

I have used the Pulsar D550 and it is quite good for the money, definitely better than anything Gen 1 and most Gen2 out there.

Good NV is big money, if you want crap, there is plenty around, but it will disappoint.

If hunting over a feeder, consider a game light on the feeder, red light won't bother them.

spend the money for a better device ... buy once suffer once ... The M845 for about $1800 is a much better device than the Pulsar ...
For $2k you can get a M845 and a IR illuminator ... Price of admission is more than a pulsar but worth it.
Gen 1 = joke - waste of money
Gen 2 = later + and HP models aren't bad with added IR illum
Gen 3 = expensive but worth it - if you spring for it get the new filmless tubes
Have all used generations of NOD/NVG/Thermals ... the cheap stuff is just that ...
Now ... I understand people don't have $5k to throw at a NVG hunting setup.  If I lived down south and was going pig thumpin on a budget ... the M845 and a torch would be my setup.
The digital stuff has come a long way.  If your in a fixed position its workable ... moving ... panning and scanning ... it blurs like crazy.
