First I would like to thank everyone on here for the hours of reading in my quest for a new scope. I have searched and think I have some scopes narrowed down. I have a Ruger Hawkeye all weather 300 Win Mag for elk hunting in Wyoming, so shooting will be under 350 yards. I want to keep in the $350-450 range, but could go a little higher if needed. Also I would like to know if the Ruger rings that came with the gun will be good enough or if I should upgrade.

Thanks in advance
Sam

I really like this particular scope for hunting because it is a really tough scope witht  good glass and the 6x42 is as bright of an optic as you can buy in low light. The factory rings will work nicely with this scope.  One of the great things about this model is that the longrange duplex balistic reticle gives you hold over points for known distances.  I would zero the center cross hair at 200 yds next dot 300 next dot 400 and the top of the wide part of the bottom post 500  test it on the range to see that it works for your ammo and caliber but I bet it really close.  As for the ones you mentioned  I really like the Bushnell 4200 especially the 4-16x40 which had finger adjustable knobs that you can use to dial in correction for trajectory or you can buy engraved knobs from Kenton ind. that match the trajectory of your cartridge.   Nikon had a nice scope but I'm not wild about the circle thing on their balistic reticles. Burris Signature Select would be ok but I have not gotten along well with their customer service people.

Thanks for the reply. I want as much info as possible before I head to the store and look at the scopes. As far as reticles I was not impressed with the nikon bdc circles either if I was going that route I would just get the plex.

This scope would right in the middle of your budget:

With some scopes it seems the Ruger rings set the scope higher than some guys like. Other than that, since Ruger has switched to allen head or torx head(can't remember which)ring screws I'd have no problems with them.

I would take the Sig Sel over the FFII.  Better glass.  I also like the ball-plex reticle better than the Nikon BDC circles.  Just a personal preference.  The nice thing about the 4200 is the raingaurd.  Works great.

I would think that any of the the brands work work great.  I would look at the 3-9 models.

As for the rings, I went away from the Ruger rings on my 300WM m77.  Scope sat too high.  In fact I think it is still higher than I want.  I am still trying to find lower rings to get the proper cheek weld.

With one exception the Rugers use some bastard size of torx that is different from what everyone else uses so other Leupold, Warne, Burris, Badger etc wrenches wont fit it and you have to hunt the wrench down at a hardware store if you loose one.  This can be really frustrating when you have about 30 the wrong size on your work bench.
