Hello,

I, too, am a new member with a question (much like Jmac603).

I just bought a Rem 700 CDL SF in .30-06 and would like your recommendations for which scope and mounting system to put on it. I plan on using it to hunt deer and elk in the western states, so I'm thinking shots from 50 to 3-400 yards. I will be practicing primarily on a 200 yd range. I was thinking the 3-9X 40 class scopes would be best for my application, but I am admittedly steeply climbing the learning curve and would appreciate your thoughts.

First of all, which model scope? I would like to stay in the neighborhood of $300. But I'm willing to bump that a little if there's a ripping good value for a little bit more. I saw the recommendation to Jmac603 on the Bushnell Elite 4200 or Zeiss Conquest. Do you think those recommendations hold for my rifle?

Secondly, what mounting hardware would you recommend? I have only just begun to look at this portion of the setup, so any advice would help.

I am not particularly concerned with mounting a silver scope over my stainless barrel, as I favor function over aesthetics.

Thanks in advance for your input! I appreciate you sharing your knowledge with this newbie.

ive got a cdlsf myself, only mine is black and in .264win mag. the 4200 elite looks great up there. i just wish i would have used something like talley lightweights instead of leupold standards.

As far as mounting I would say talley or warne would be fine for your application.  The elite 4200 is a great scope as is the Conquest.  I am partial to the Bushnell and they have held up great for me on my guns.  The 3200 is a good line to and is only marginally handicapped compared to the 4200 and you will have some coin left to use on the mounts.

And welcome to the OT

Either of those scopes would be perfect for your needs.

I would get these rings.  http://swfa.com/Talley-Lightweight-Aluminum-1-Scopemount-P2843.aspx

Welcome to OT, AhSpray!

For scopes in your stated budget, it's hard to beat the Elite 4200.

Another excellent scope at an unbeatable price is the Nikon Team Primos 3-9X40...
You even get a free camo jacket with it!  It has the previous generation Monarch optics.

As for mounts, the Talley Lightweights are nice...

I would also add the Nikon to the mix. The glass is pretty close to the 4200 to my eyes. The scope is a nice sized package that would also look good on your CDL, as would the Bushnell.
I have the Monarch version with the plex reticle and it has been doing a good job the last two seasons. Another friend has the BDC and if you are hunting in low light and/or heavy cover I would compare the 4200 plex to the Nikon BDC. The reticle might not be heavy enough to pick up in these conditions. It isn't for me.
And, welcome to O.T.

Doug

I think I'll go with the Nikon and Talleys. There's certainly better glass out there. But I doubt my old eyes will be able to distinguish the difference.

Thank you all for the feedback.
