I have a chance to buy a Colt Anaconda 44 mag for a decent price. It has a bushnell trophy red dot on the top but I am not sure if I like the fact thats its a red dot because I dont want to rely on batteries. I was wondering if someone could suggest another scope or if whats on it is good enough. I will be using it for whitetail hunting and maybe a couple of black bears and would like to get as much range out of it as I can but probably not more than 65 yards. I was interested in a 2x-7 or something of that sort. Can anyone reccomend a scope. Much thanks.

I recommend using a 1x or 2x scope on a hunting pistol. I have a 1x Burris on a Encore pistol and it works well. I  had a 3-12 with balistic plex and didn't like it very well for a hunting scope. As the power gets higher eye relief becomes more critical (always at the wrong distance). You might like the red dot try it before you buy something else they are nice in lower light and usually more compact.

Stick with a quality scope Leupold, Nikon, Burris, Weaver.

For the range you mention, a 2x is plenty of magnification.  I have used Burris, Leupold, and Sightron 2x scopes on 44mags.The Sightron needed to be replaced which was done on the spot by the dealer from whom I purchased it.

I use Burris 2-7X32.  I used a 2X20 before and like the 2-7 a lot better.  1.  2X is enough, but sometimes 3X or 4X is a lot better, even at 75 yards.  I only use the higher powers for targets.  2.  The 2X ran out of light too soon.  The 32mm objective on the zoom is a LOT brighter.  Buy the zoom, and even if you never use anything but 2X, you'll be better off.

The 2-7x32 would probably work well for you with the 3-12 I ran into trouble about the time I got over 6x.  The balistic plex reticle is a nice reticle. Nikon is another possible:

1.5-4 or 2-7 will work well and as far as brands, weaver, burris, and leupold all have worked well for my hunting. Not one of them has failed.
