I am finally putting glass on my rifles.

Putting a Vortex Viper PST 4-16 on my remington 700 Long action (300 mag).

My trouble is I know NOTHING about mounting the scope--so after doing my scope research now I need help selecting mounting options.

This is my hunting rifle, 300 magnum--nothing fancy but a good quality rifle that deserves a good quality mount--i was just going to go the Cabela's or Bass pro shop, but I couldn't get the optic I wanted (really wanted a mil-dot--I'm big on math).  So now I'm kinda on my own.

I still may pay the gun store $20 to mount it, but their advice has always been suspect.

These would be my recommendation. I use them on all my hunting rigs.  You can instal them yourself they are so simple you just need to follow the direction supplied with them

Talley Lightweight Aluminum 30mm Scopemount Talley Lightweight Aluminum 30mm Scopemount

  • Howa 1500
  • Remington 40X
  • Remington 700
  • Remington 721

you may need highs being you have a 50obj, best bet is to call swfa at 1-972-SCOPE-IT and ask them what height.  They will not steer you wrong. guaranteed

Many thanks--I gave SWFA a call and I got the procedure to calculate size--I went with the High Version (adjusted for the scope tube change).  Medium was 1mm or less clearance. (I also dropped to a Nikon 4-16  and used the savings to grab a spotting scope off the sample list).

TXBob,

Just FYI and something to think about.  I put a VIPER PST 6-24x50 on my 6.5x.284 for long range shooting.  Unfortunately, a 100 yard 0 already had almost 40MOA of elevation used up on the scope.  I haven't swapped it, but plan on swapping it soon for a 40MOA base, so you may want to think of starting with a 20MOA base if you'll be shooting at any distance.

Rick

Thanks for the heads up--I was thinking about doing that initially, but I stopped trying to make this into my "everything" rifle and just made it my hunting rifle.  For my 308 that I intend to do some serious long range shooting, I definitely will be looking at a 20-40 MOA mount.  But that's a whole other scope decision.

Right now I'm limited to 100 yards for zeros and shooting, until I find a better spot I don't feel bad about what I spent.  If I do eventually push out to 300 to 600, hopefully by then, I'll be knowledgeable from loitering around here and can upgrade to a canted mount and rings.
