I am new to scoped rifle, making a transition from 10m air iron sights to .22 ruger 10/22 smallbore w/scope.

The kinds of target matches I'll be shooting at my club:

1. A fun match: seated but self-supported at 50 yards, then off-hand to 25 yards and 15 yards.
2. NRA silhouette off hand, open class (not sure what the distances are, but I think they go out to 100 yards and as close as 15).
Our range max distance is 100 yards.

Would really like to come in under $300.
Thanks!

What are you looking for magnification wise? We can recommend several that we think will do just fine. But that is based on our own needs vision wise. For example, I need nothing more than a 4 power at that range to be extremely accurate, provided the scope is decent glass wise. with this in mind I would call the Nikon Team Primos, or Bushnell 3-9 40X 4200 perfect for that use. This depends upon which reticle youd be most comfy with.

Not exactly sure how to answer.  It seems like a few people in the club have scopes that are either 6-24 or 8-32, but much more expensive than what I want to spend.  I never really asked what magnification setting they use for 100 yards.

Ok..... let's try this then. Punch a hole in a piece of paper and set it out. Walk backwards from it and when you can no longer see the hole, measure that distance in yards. Divide the range yardage that you will primarily be shooting at by this number. That should help you determine a close enough power for what you want to be using. I wouldn't think anything past about 15 on the high end would be needed.

+1 Cyborg is giving good advice!  I have a 2.5-10X40 Bushnell 4200 and love it!  It has very good glass and is bright and clear.  I have mine on my 270 cal and have no problem seeing the holes and putting them where I want them to go at a 100 yds!  So for a 22 anythingover 16X is overkill IMO.  Also the higher the mag used the more you will see your body movement and even heartbeat move your POI.  I have actually used the high mag 16-20X as a bio-feedback tool.  When wearing only a tee-shirt at 16X I can sit at the bench and watch the crosshairs jump on the target in rhythum to my heartbeat in my shoulder.  I use calming techniques and this bio-feedback to settle and quiet myself.

The final ingredient is that the higher the mag range the more expensive the scope, usually

I believe that Chris still has some Team Primos 3-9X40 Scopes available on the sample list for $179.95  That is a hard to beat price for a GOOD quality scope!

I thought that both the Nikon Team Primos, and Bushnell 3-9 40X 4200 had the parallax set for 50yds. Wouldn't that be a problem for shooting at 15yds? If so I would lean more towards something like the Vortex Diamondback 4-12x40 AO, since is focuses down to 10 yds. Or the Sightron 3-12x42 AO, but that one is $45 over your budget.
