I'm getting ready to scope a rifle and have narrowed it down to the new Leuopld VX-III or the Swarovski A-line. The scope will be in a 3.5-10x40mm (42mm Swaro).

Is the Swarovski worth the additional money? I've used one of the new VX-IIIs' on a West Texas whitetail hunt last year & was very pleased. Just can't help wondering if the Swarovski would be worth the extra money.

Which one of them has the simplest range finding reticle to use? The B&C or the TDS?

Thanks again.........

I can't speak on a side by side between the Swaro & Leupold. Though I can speak on a side by side with the Zeiss Conquest and Leuopold VX-III.

The Leuopold VX-III line of scopes are a very good bang for the buck scope that will do your deer  duty just fine. I found it to be bright and fairly clean. It did however have edge to edge clarity issues; IMO.

I and three others found the Conquest to be even cleaner (Edge to edge clarity) and the Conquest had better viewable qualities in the shadows.

IMHO the above was reasonable in spending the extra $50 - $75 for the Conquest. But if you were talking about $300 or more between the two I dont know. Many IMO spend for good enough optics over the best and I understand this mind set.

In either case I believe you will be happy.

"Which one of them has the simplest range finding reticle to use? The B&C or the TDS?"

Neither reticle is a range finding reticle.  The hash marks are merely hold over references that work off a predetermined range.

The Swarovski will be better optically.... thats a given. The Leupold will compare to the Swarovski in mid day when light is abundant. During the morning hours, and late at night is when the $300 difference will be justified. A good in between scope would be the conquest as noddah mentioned.

Leupold 3.5-10x50 VX-III Riflescope B&C Reticle.....$619.95

Zeiss 3.5-10x44 Conquest with ZRF ranging reticle......$669.95

Swarovski 3-10x42 American TDS Reticle.....$918.95

There is no doubt that the Swarovski is better optically and will be brighter in low light use.  Only you can justify if the money is worth it.

Check the SampleList.com site this week as we are adding about 50 Swarovski scopes to it.
