Not sure if there are many gamers on here.... but a new game came out.  Here is my review.
Summary, rent it.... don't buy it.  You might like the single player but not sure it is worth the $60.
Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising is a military simulator game that has just been released for XBOX360 and PS3.  This first person shooter game has something like 10 missions that are rather difficult.  Quite a few weapon systems too.  A very "open" environment.  This is NOT your standard linear video game.  You can approach a mission from any number of angles based on cover and terrain.  You can also play the game with an emphasis of controlling your squad vs. shooting tangos yourself.
Single Player
The single player I really enjoy.  Having shot military style rifles like the M4 quite a bit... boy they have the difficulty of firing a rifle down pat.  When you are standing and try to fire.... it IS that hard to keep your irons or scope on a target for distances over 50 meters.   When you go prone or crouch with support it is much easier to aim..... as it should be.  You CAN fire waaaaay too accurate when you move.... but oh, well.  A bit of hollywood worked its way into the game.  Perhaps trained military can be this effective whilst moving, I know I AM NOT.  So that could be "more real" but after all, it is a video game.
The ELCAN in the game... including the reticule.... is spot on with the ELCAN that I purchased on  You actually DO have to use the range markings based on how far away the enemy is from you... and the mil-spec opics WORK PROPERLY for the corresponding range.  You also have to adjust for windage, elevation, and movement when you fire at an enemy.  Enemy soldiers are VERY hard to see as IT SHOULD BE.  After all, this is a combat simulator.
The single player game allows you to control vehicles.  This aspect of the game is not very well polished, but it is tolerable.
Co-op experience has been pretty awful.  Granted, we were all n00bZ, so I am willing to give that a few more tries.  The poor vehicles and sometimes hit detection are less than desirable.  With a host with a great connection a four man team of buddies may be a blast.  Possibly the "most real" experience you can get in a game without having to own and run a complicated PC and PC game.  The console allows you to "plug right in" to a more hardcore experience without having to be an IT professional.  More on this later as I experience it more.
Multiplayer adversarial
Multiplayer was a NIGHTMARE.  I would compare the vehicles to as much fun.... and as difficult.... as doing your taxes blindfolded while being waterboarded in the arctic with only shorts on during a hurricane while having to listen to a jackhammer.  Perhaps as host vehicles are easier to use.  Otherwise, BAH.  I mean we are talking almost ZERO interest for me to try it again.  About the only thing that could save it.... would be if we all agreed to NOT use the vehicles or something.   Of course then you are getting into "playing half of a game" and I am not much of a fan of that...  I wonder if any of this could be fixed via patch?
Oh, and in non-hardcore mode your "compass" has a sort of enemy identifyer system that isn't very "real".  It is EXACTLY this kind of un-real feature that I think turns off many of us hard-core gamers like... isn't it?  I am wondering if there is a way to turn that off?

Sahweet, thanks Ick.  I loved the original flashpoint and the two or 3 expansion packs that came out on the computer 8 or 10 years back.  I have not played any of the newer ones.  It was a dang fun sim though.  Might have to give this one a try.  I am on my 3rd time through battlefield bad company, it is to much fun.  I don't have much time to game any more, but it is quite enjoyable when I can find an extra hour once and a while.
