I am new to this whole reloading thing.  Trigger29 has gotten me roped into trying this whole reloading business.  I finally found some primers today so I can start developing a load that my rifle will like.  I am just wondering what I should try out first...

I have a Browning A-Bolt w/BOSS .270 Winchester.  Don't know much about it yet.  My cousin gave it to me as a Christmas bonus one year for working for him.  I have been hunting with it maybe for four years and that is just deer.  I have maybe ran three boxes total of either Winchester or Remington Core-Lokt ammo.  I have always gotten a descent group after I purchased a scope that would hold zero.

My question is what should I try first....  I purchased Winchester primers and Sierra 140gr Gamekings today and planning on getting some Hornady SSTs tomorrow.  Trigger29 is letting me use some of his powders so I can try some before buying several and finding out they are not worth a hoot.  He has Reloader 22, IMR 4831, and 7828SSC. Please help me out...

I really like IMR 4831.  I shoot Barnes bullets and Nosler Accubonds.  I hear the Gamekings shoot really well also.  I'd load up some of the Gamekings and see how the shoot.  Hodgdon has a really nice web-site that gives you a lot of loads for most any cartridge.  You'll probably want to purchase a manual...the Nosler is my favorite.

I have a truckload of IMR 4831. I figured we'd start with that and the Gamekings he bought today. If we can't make that work out, I shoot a .270 cal as well, we have many bullets for him to try. The SST's that he's looking into shot well for me, as well as the Sierra's. I shot the 150 gr., but I'm sure we'll find a good load for him with the 140.

IMR4831

Great powder for the 270 and 140 gr bullets.  RL22 will work good for the 150 gr bullets and IMR4350 for the 130 gr bullets.

Fed215 primers or at least Fed210's

I've never had a 270 cause I always had a 30-06 and thought the two cartridges might get mixed up. Sounds like you have a good teacher already. You might note that reloading for straight wall cartridges like 38, 44, 45-70 is probably the easiest. Horniday Unique lube is a good choice for lube.

I had 200 of them, but after shooting 130 of them and not getting a decent group yet, I gave up. I load some for my 25-06, but they won't shoot in my wsm. They seem less consistant than other bullets. The Sierra's have been very consistant, both in shape and weight for me. This last box of Speer bullets I opened had bullets that varied by a couple grains, they Sierra's varied by a couple tenths. Hornady has been pretty good so far as well.

Trigger was taken, so I put my age (at the time) after my username.

My Dad shoots an A-bolt .270 with 140gr GameKings and 4831 with much success, as does my Brother from his 700BDL.

If you don't get the results you're looking for on your first batch or two, don't give up on the bullet/powder combo too easily.  Remember to experiment with different seating depths as well.  A tiny difference on the dial calipers can mean a HUGE difference on paper, even at only 100yds.  Even switching primers, such as going to a benchrest primer can make a differnce, though not normally as critical as proper seating depth.

Good luck and be sure to report back with your results.

Start with the 4831.  Great powder for that gun.  I used it with my 130 gr for years.  If you are going to load 140, I would go with the RL-22.
