Just wanted to say Hi, Just joined today. Was pointed here from the Hide. I love to shoot all my rifle, but lean more to my center fire now days. Been moving to long range with a RPR 6.5 and 223.I don't have any ranges out past 430 yds in my area. But at that distance there is a lot to learn. The reason I came to the site is I had a question about a SS 20x42 and two member at The Hide sent me here. I have three 20x42 and love them, tho one was giving me an issue. The one inch dot target would become foggie to the point I could not see at all, but the reticle stay clear. I did speak with SWFA and Skyler said sent it in for a checkup. I hoping that they find the problem for I hate to think it just in my head. As I said I have three of these scope and each have Bi-Pod mounted on the rifles so I could compare each to the same target at the same time without having to move them.Thank for the help advance. I know that I will have lots of dum questions.

Define "foggie"?

And at what range is this happening?

The SS scopes are a great bargain, but the 20X is my least favorite of the lineup.  At 20X, they are never exactly bright, and on days when mirage is an issue, you have an unusable scope.

That said, if you are talking to Skylar, you are in good hands.  If there is an issue with the scope SWFA will make it right.

For your max range, I would be far more inclined to go with the 10X, it will be brighter, it will have less issue with mirage, and I shoot better at lower magnification than I do at 20X or higher - but that might just be me.

Ranid, By foggie I mean that at 100 yds a 1 inch dot just become a blur. N clean line in the circle.

What happens to things other than the dot?  Is the problem just in the center or the entire field of view?

What is the ambient temperature when this happens?

Is your reticle in focus?  And was it focused properly?

We can inch closer to an answer, probably.  That'll save you having to ship it back to SWFA.

In the end, it could be a scope problem that only they can solve, but let's eliminate some possibilities before we decide that.

Rancid, to late for that UPS out yesterday, But I would like your input. The fog would be the entire field of view.Temp was upper 70 light over cast. The reticle was very clear no issue.

Rancid many from the Hide have suggested that I go with a 10x. I may try that even tho I do like the 20xs for at 74 year old the eyes are just a little lacking. I have a 36 on a rimfire for 50 yds bench work, work well.

Did the scope ever work as expected?

If it is already boxed up and going home, I won't try to trouble-shoot, Skylar will make it right.

On the 10X, yes, I would recommend over the 20X for anything but a dedicated 1000-yard gun that is shot only from the bench and only in cool conditions.

As for the Hide, there are some very, very knowledgeable people there, and some on the opposite end of the spectrum.  As for who is who, you'll figure it out pretty quickly.  I occasionally post there as well, but this is mostly home.

Let us know how this ends up.

I've had the 20 I like the 16 a lot better. I've had several models of 10x the HD being a significant improvement which I wish was made in 16x but the 5-20 covers that need. The gear type turret design of the HD 10x, 3-9 & 5-20 is more desirable than the three hex screw style adjustment covers. I wish all of the line shared the same style covers with single screw on top.

There is a fairly newer SS 12X that is also a good deal.  Slightly more mag but still not enough to cause mirage issue that the 16x and 20x are sometimes plagued by.

Well all I am glad to say that SWFA received my scope on Tuesday the 7th and that I received a new 20X in the box today. Can you believe that service? Well this type of service and the good reports  I have read about the 5-20 will now cost me more money. Hope my wife don't read this post.
    Thank you SWFA

Glad you got taken care of.  What out for Black Friday Sales/Deals if you aren't in a hurry or www.samplelist.com if you are ok with a demo/used option.

SVT, I have no problems buying the demo c they have listed now for $950. I was all so looking at the 3-15, but I do like the though of not having the set screws on the turrets. What others thoughts for out to 500 yds, I don't think I will ever get the chance to shot a range over that in my area?
