Hi all, I just recently joined, although I have been reading various posts on here for a while. I just recently got a Savage LRP in .260 and need to get a scope for it. I will probably be taking the gun hunting from a stand as well as to the ranging, shooting anywhere from 100 to 1000 yards. While hunting, I would be shooting less than 400 yards. I know many people don't line all around guns, but this is what my budget will allow now, so I will have to make do. My budget for a scope is in $1500 range. What recommendations would you make?

Thanks,

Jim

This would be my set up for said rifle, I know others will chime in with other options. This would be a good all around set-up.

Hey Jim, the SWFA 5-20X50 may work out for you, if you want FFP.

For SFP, the Vortex PST series could be a good match for your uses, and save a bunch of money.

Thanks for the replies so far. I have read some good things on the SS scopes. Is there much of a difference in glass quality between the 3-15 and 5-20?

Yes, there is a huge difference.

The 5-20 boasts HD lenses. This will supply you with the utmost clarity when observing your target image.

The 3-15 is a very good scope, I love the one that I have. But it is not HD. The difference is noticeable.

Yeah. HD + low turrets. Just kidding. I've never found the lack of either to be an impediment.

Norcalnewb, I know you're not going to want to hear this but really reconsider the idea of a one-size-fits-all rifle. It's just not that great trying to hunt with a long-range capable rifle. Shoot the heck out of reasonably-priced rifle with a scope like the SS 3-9 until you're bored stiff with hitting everything you can under 500 yards in all kinds of conditions. By that, I mostly mean wind and the crappiest weather you can stand. I've learned more trying to fire 100 yards with iron sights in a blizzard with a 30 mph crosswind than I ever have noodling around with long range ballistics. And believe me, having authored a ballistics app, I messed around with that enough.

Most miserable hunting I ever did was with a custom 24" barreled rifle sporting an expensive scope. Best hunting has been with a "cheap" Tikka T3 Lite (although I spent more than the original price to upgrade with a Manners stock) and an SS 3-15.

Reaction time is a factor...

I have a couple of other rifles. An old savage .243 handed down to me by my father and ss Weatherby Vangard in .300 WSM. I hunt with both of these routinely. I also have a rem auto loading .270 that I don't shoot too much any more. This new rifle will be something to shoot at the range a bunch but also take on the occasional deer hunt, so I will make it an all around gun. If it doesn't work out as a hunting rig, then I should still have good gun for the range.

Then by all means this is your best bet.

I don't really like FFP reticles for target use.  The reticles get really big at high powers.

If that is your primary use for the gun, I would look at some SFP options.

You name it: skis, computers, bikes, guns. There's a limit to versatility. Consider your major use case and optimize for that. Often times you can cover a wide range but sometimes at much greater expense, complexity or compromise.
