Been reading the forum for a good bit and wanted to thank you folks for all the information provided.  I finally decided to take the plunge on a new 1.7-10x42 Z6....................At $1400 out the door, I could not pass it up.  Great scope with fantastic glass.  Mounted it on my A-Bolt .300 WSM and all I can say is wow.  Biggest drawback in my opinion is at the 1.7 power, the barrel of the gun showing up.  Almost seems that the 1.7 is too low for the type of hunting I do, which can vary from 300 yard shots down to 20-30 yard shots in the brush.  Not, that I would miss a deer at close range but, as others have suggested, 3x is probably the perfect fit on the low end.  Really like the scope and the brigtness and clarity, but IMO the extra FOV is not worth feeling like you are using iron sights when you are looking through a $1400 scope. Chances are, if an animal gets that close, it will be very dark and iron sights would be just as good.  Hope I did not make a $1400 mistake...........Further evaluations to come.

I don't think you did. I've been in a tree stand and a pig came up under me and I think I would have had problems if I could only go down to 3 power. Having the option to go that low when breaking brush. etc. is something I like as well as the rest of the variable range.  I went with the 2-12x50. IMHO it makes the Z6  a great scope for many different situations. Oh yeah, the optics is pretty good too!! Wink

Mike,

The optics are fantanstic!  I've used Leupold's exclusively for the last 20 years and finally decided to try the other side...........May just take some getting used to, never used anything less than a 3-4X.   Love the scope, just don't like the seeing the barrel of my gun on 1.7, LOL.  Something I will have to get used to.  Purchased a Zeiss Diavari 2.5-10x50 Classic , for this rifle and after looking through the Z6, the Zeiss is for sale if anyone is interested, $1150 shipped and insured to the lower 48 states.  Going Yote hunting this weekend, will post how the scope performs.

No, I'm not kidding, if you want it, $1150 shipped and insured.   The scope has not been put on a gun.  I paid $1100.00 for the scope from an authorized Zeiss dealer.  Warranty will be intact.  Let me know.

I Think the 1,7 is really perfect.
The 1,7 on the Z6 is about the same FOV as a 1,5 on a European 1,5-6X and when shooting on driven hunts that is great with so low magnification.
Sometimes I have the animal on 5-10 yards and in such cases i have other things in my head than to look for a barrel in the scope.

To me this issue is like the issue with non round dots in the Aimpoint, if you are concentrated enogh on the animal you will not see it.

Regards Technika

Its completely gone on 3x, not a huge deal, just something I've never had to deal with.  I'm sure the pros of the scope will outweigh the cons once I get her sighted in and go hunting with it.  It fits my A-bolt like a glove with Leupold low mount rings.  Thought I may have to go to medium rings but was able to get about 1" clearance with the bolt open.  Now I need to eject some shells to make sure they will clear the scope without hitting the bottom of the scope, going to do that tonight.

That's cool!!

I'm thinking my barrel disappears at 2.5 but have to check; currently in Dallas for training but I'll look when I get home. I had to use high rings for my 2-12x50. I've seen where some have used medium rings on 50mm scopes but with it mounted on my remy 700 rifle, proper eye relief and bolt clearance, I had to use highs.

That scope looks GREAT on that rifle, antleraddiction!  I like the lines of the Z6, and from what I could tell from briefly looking through a couple of them at a show, they appeared to be optically awesome as well!

Man that is a beautiful looking setup! Looks like you will have plenty of room for scope caps,  what kind of rings and bases are those?

Leupold bases and rings, went with the 7A to stay with what I'm used to shooting in the Leupold line,  always have shot a duplex or heavy duplex.  At first, wanted a TDS, but after a fiasco with my Nikon BDC on my Omega smoke pole decided to stick with the duplex...........

Thanks supertool and rifledude, I'm pretty happy so far, sold some Leupolds to buy it and have another on order, so will be selling a few more Leupolds.  Cutting back on my guns to make room for the kids guns, have a girl that is 8 and a wrong handed boy that just turned 4.  Hope they love the woods like I do.  Loosing a good bit of quality gun ground here in the South, but hope to hold onto enough to pass the love on to them.
