Hi there, I just picked up my new 5r today and am really excited to get some glass for it.

I will be doing most of my shooting at the range at 100, 200, 300, and 600 yards (maybe an occasion here and there to 1000?).

I would like to not spend a ton on scope, under $1000, and would be happy to keep it well under if possible.

I was considering the SWFA SS 3-9x42 as well as the Sightron 3.5-10x44 SIII, and anything else folks might suggest.

Other question is do I need a 20 MOA base for these and what size rings do I need (standard, medium, high?).

Thanks for the assistance, I look forward to hearing your suggestions.

Both are good scopes, although the SS is probably a bit more "tactical" oriented.  Both should get you to 1000 without a base that has any elevation built into it.  personally I'll go against the grain here and say that I'd run the Sightron if you were target shooting only.

Yeah, I saw that and it looks really sweet!  I just didn't know if going with the 10X would limit me in any way....

If it is a pure bench gun, 10X will not limit.  If it might see other uses, 10X is too much inside 200 yards or so - especially if your target might be moving.  A fixed 10X has a very narrow field of view at 100 yards.

Will this be a bench-only gun?

You know, that's a good question, and the answer is a definite maybe...  I like the idea of having variable power, which is why I was leaning towards the 3-9.  Is there a big difference in the view in this one at 9x versus the 10x at 600 - 1000 yards?

Also, assuming I will need a 20MOA base for whatever I get, correct?

Thanks again for the answers so far guys.

At 600 yards at 9x the target will look like it is 66 yards away.  At 10x 60 yards away.

At 1000 yards 9x 111, and 10x. 100 yards.

No much difference there, but having the low end of the variable might make a huge difference based on your use.

The 3-9 cover far more bases than a fixed 10X does.  If you are unsure exactly what the rifle will be required to do well, I'd get the 3-9.

A 20MOA base is not need, but it will not hurt (I'd get a 20MOA, it doesn't hurt, it's not more expensive, and you may one day mount a scope with less elevation adjustment.)

On a flat base, the 3-9 has adequate elevation adjustment to get you to 1,000 (.308) without any problems.

Doesn't the 3-9x just have 20 mils of advertised adjustment?  That might put you right on the verge of reaching 1000 yards with the .308.  I would definitely get the 20 moa base.

Yep, I just ordered this with the 20 MOA base, thanks again guys.  Only thing was with the package deal, the anti reflection device was on backorder...  I asked if it could ship without that so as to not delay the order.  Hopefully they can square that away, haven't heard back yet....

Not a bad choice, especially the 20MOA base.  I'll be dropping the financial hammer on a USO ST-10 tomorrow myself.

Excellent advice. To elaborate on that, you generally only have half that total adjustment (10 mils) and that's not much.  I have a .308 load (165 gr bullet @ 2725 fps MV) that needs 9.6 mils of adjustment out @ 1000 yards. A 20 MOA base buys you 5.82 mils (20/(3.6/1.047)).

UPDATE:  Excited to hear the doorbell ring and see UPS with my package.  I open it up, and I have everything in the box, EXCEPT THE DANG SCOPE!!!!!!

How do you leave the scope out?  I ordered the swfa2 kit, my EGW 20 MOA rail showed up, along with the sun shade, BC lens caps kit, rings, mil-dot master, hat and even the SS Koozie, but NO SCOPE.  :(  The kill-flash is on back order, I expected it, but man oh man, what a disappointment.

Yaaaaaaarrrrgghhhhhhh.........  I know they will make it right, but wow, I am majorly bummed right now.

Was the scope on backorder or did it ship in a separate box?  What does the packing slip say?

No, the kill flash was on back order, I wanted the rest of the kit shipped without it, so for some reason they tried to do a price adjustment, and my scope got listed as "Price Adjustment" and as such didn't get packed.  :)

I talked to them this morning and they are shipping it out today, so things have been worked out and it will hopefully show up tomorrow.

Very nice folks in customer service as well.....

Ok folks, you wanted a pic when it was all set up, so here it is!  Not a great one, from my iPhone, but you get the idea.

I had the barrel bedded and the trigger worked on by a local gunsmith so she should be ready to go...

Now I just need to get out and shoot, thanks again for the help everyone!
