HI, I just bought at new Sig 716 Patrol.
I do not know much about scopes.

I will mostly use the rifle for target shooting. Probably mostly long range.
I would like...
  • Parallax adjustment.
  • Good Eye Relief
  • Not to heavy.
  • Color crosshair
  • Good glass
So what is the best scope in a price range of 400 - 500 $

Thanks..

Thanks for your reply.
I could go higher in price if it really is worth it.
I was told that when buying a scope it is seldom necessary to spend more than 400.

Just dont wanna buy something for 400 and then later regret that I didn't spend more.
I live in Vegas and was thinking about looking at craigslist or backpage for a used one, but as I dont know to much about it it is hard for me to figure out what a scope is worth.

Was Eisenhower in office when you were told this? Big Grin
That's as ridiculous a statement as you must spend $2000 US to shoot accurately at 1000 yards.

I agree with UF the 3-15 SS is a good match for your list, and only a bit over budget.

Black is a color.

If you take UIF's suggestion, you will have an excellent 1000+ yard set up.  If you go with a SS 10xHD, it would be reasonable, though not optimum, for hunting, as well.  Or, the 3-15 is superior.  You have a lot of choices.  Precision 1000 yards shots... ammo is going to be your big cost driver, then barrels, then...
there is a lot more to consider than the initial investment.

With a 16" chrome-lined barrel, don't plan on high precision from your 716. They are decent guns, but not purpose-built for long range precision.

As I have said many times before: there will be ranges you shoot often and ranges you shoot rarely. Don't set the rifle up for the rare shots, set it up for the common shots.

If the longest range in your area is 500 yards but you might shoot 1,000 once a year or so, I'd call that a 500 yard gun. And, making it more complicated, 1,000 shots are not easy. At all.

I'd say look at the 3-9SS or 3-15SS.

And the friend who told you more than $400 is a waste, don't take scope advice from him. Or her.

I might be upgrading the barrel later.

What about the Nikon

Nikon M-223 3-12x42mm

I know the 3-15 ss is a better scope.. but the nikon is only 375 - 459.
Maybe this could be a good beginner scope...
I am willing to spend the 700... but as a non-experienced shooter maybe the Nikon will do it... and then later I can upgrade.

It sounds like you are somewhat new to the long(ish) range shooting so the scope you pick now should be something that is easy to learn with and to operate.

With that in mind, I would be looking for something with
- moderate magnification range: 3-9x, 3-15x, 3-10x, etc
- moderate objective bell size: 36 to 44mm
- FFP (front focal plane) reticle so that you do not have two worry which magnification you are at when using the reticle for holdover or range estimation

Your 716 is a nice gun, but it was never intended as a 1000yard gun.  Think of it as something that will get you out to 800 yards with reasonable comfort if you put in some practice time.

Affordable FFP scopes are far and few in between.

Two that I like quite a bit (and have both) are already mentioned here: SWFA SS 3-9x42 and 3-15x42.

3-15x42 is a little better beyond 500 yards.
3-9x42 is a little easier to use (no side-focus) and a touch better in low light

Another option that might actually be a good idea for you since it is pretty straightforward ot use is one of PFI's Rapid Reticle scopes.

Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 with the FFP reticle is a good scope that is a little bit big for your rifle, but might work.

The smaller Vortex Viper 2.5-10x32 would be a better option.

Personally, I would probably lean toward keeping it simple and sticking with a scope that is not too big.

Get SWFA SS 3-9x42 with Mil-Quad reticle for $600 and take a precision rifle class.

ILya

Well worth a second and third read. Great advise.
