I'm a new member here. I was hoping for some advise on a new scope for a JC HIGGINS MODEL 50.   30.06  It has an FN Mauser 98 bolt action. It had a 4x fixed power scope on it .
I will be using this rifle for mostly 400 to 800 target but also want it to hunt with. I've been looking in $800-$1200 range and I want a quality scope. I've been looking at Leupold Mark 4 mr/t  .  Any suggestions or advise would be great.  THANKS

I don't like Leaupold, much.  Better scopes for same or less money.  This scope is worth consideration:

Meopta 4-16x44 Meostar R1 30mm Rifle Scope
Stock # - 468680
  • Silver
  • Mil-Dot
  • 30mm

Very good glass, solid construction.  I don't own one but shoot with a guy who does.  I've switched it to my 30-06 several times, Talley QR rings,  and really like it.
$979.95

Variable Super Sniper is probably your best bet.  It was built for these ranges:

If you want a little more magnification, I would look at one of the new Vortex Viper PST scopes that should be available some time in the spring:

If you want to stay with a 1" tube, Zeiss Conquest is a good option:

ILya

The Super Sniper Variable is probably the "best value" of all...

I noticed you want to hunt with this as well as targets at fairly long range. One thing I have found for myself is the higher power at the bottom end takes away the field of view and for quick close shots at game when FOV is important. The 3-9 SS will give you a good dual purpose scope. To get those shots on target with an 06 at 800 yards could be tough without the internal adjustments and turrets. This is where I believe the new 6 times power range scopes could come into their own if they had the internal adjustments and turrets. In your price range for a dual purpose the Super Sniper may be a good bet. I'm now working with a new VX3 4.5-14 and CDS to do just what you are talking about, but I sure miss the FOV when I'm hunting in the brush!
