Howdy all -

Okay.  A friend of mine wants to get a new scope for a recently purchased .243.  His budget is $1,000 or less.  His requirements are something with top end magnification of 12x-16x but with an objective lens less than 50mm, preferably as close to 40mm as possible.

I recommended to him a 4.5-14x44 Zeiss Conquest.  Anyone else have a good/better idea?

Thanks.

You could go with a Bushnell 6500 2.5-16x42 for $700 and then have plenty left over for a good base and rings.

Lots of choices here  ... but I like the idea of a 6500, save some bucks and have the benefits of the rainguard.

+1 on the Conquest. I have the 4.5-14x44 and love it. Never had an elite 4200, or 6500 but never hear any thing bad about them. Still pretty hard to beat the value in a Conquest. Might want to mention the sample list to him also.

My vote would go to the Zeiss but I have never looked through a Bushnell 6500. The 6500 could be right up there in optic quality with the Zeiss. If they were close in optical quality I would probably still go with the Zeiss. The target turrets that you can get on the Zeiss are very nice if you wated to go that route. My friend has a 4.5x14 44 Conquest with target turrets and Mil-dot reticle on his .223 and it is a great varmit set-up.

Having not yet seen a 6500 (but owning several Zeiss Conquest - including that one), I'd say Zeiss is a good bet.

Be advised: 15X with a 44mm objective ain't the prettiest thing you'll ever see, but it works.

I wouldn't overlook the Swaro American, I love mine  - might one day get rid of all Conquests and replace with these.

With a .243, 10X is probably enough.

Let the nay-saying begin!
