O.K. I've got a new toy en-route. It's a NIB Ruger 1 S in .300 H&H with nice lumber and real purty shined up bluing. I just can't see putting a matte scope on a gloss rifle...especially that one. This has character! It seems that gloss scope choices are rather limited...especially no high end units (Swaro, Zeiss, etc.) to my knowledge. Of course, there is Leuppy (several choices), a Pentax Lightseeker and a Sightron BS. I also found a K series Weaver in 4X38.
This scope needs to have good ER (I'd say 3.5-4" minimum) and then there are the ever frustrating #1 mounting limitations to consider. I'm also thinking (perhaps too much) about QD mounts. The Weaver only has 3.2 " of ER...bummer as it's a cool retro. I like Leupy's o.k., but they just don't WOW me. I don't know much about the Pentax...seems as if it is the same as a Burris BD if I remember correctly. Am I missing anything?  BTW, I really hate crappy scopes with crappy glass. Please don't recommend such. Thanks all.

You can make it pretty or you can make it functional.  Personally, I'd say screw the glossy scope and put good glass on it, Swaro would be my choice for most hunting rifle applications.

I understand the aesthetics, but put simply, you will be sacrificing glass quality to gloss up the optic.

Pretty wood, nice blueing, I get it; putting on a Leupold or other POS for aesthetics, it'd be a sin!

As for mounts, I have found very limited utility in QD mounts for an optic that doesn't require dis-mounting, re-mounting.  If you need to get to irons, QD is a good option., otherwise, spend the mount money on something that hold on really, really tight - she's gonna have some recoil.

"Form follows function?"

What is the intended purpose of the rifle?  Are you looking for a tough hunting scope or just something to shoot on the range or from a stand for whitetail deer?

Get a Swaro and have a custom gloss finish done to it.

I dont know mag range your looking for but this might fit.... I like the glass on my vx3 and the gloss is a nice option in this price range.

I have that scope on one of my wife's rifles. I'll give it a try, but the tube length is short, the ER variable and I would likely need medium offset rings front and rear. Scoping #1's can be a real PIA... sometimes. LOL.

Only way I can choose is to look at them in my hand.
Go to Cabelas they have glass shelf after glass shelf of scopes.
Choose one then come to SWFA and order it.
Nothin like lookin thru one first then choose.
