Hello all,
Been lurking for awhile and just can't seem to pull the trigger on a scope purchase. I'm hoping to get some help from y'all. I have a new .243 Savage Predator 10 that I'm looking to put a scope on. Along with predators, I'd like to use it for an upcoming Wyoming pronghorn hunt. I really like the Zeiss 3-9x40 Conquest and its pricepoint, but here is my dilemma: having never been pronghorn hunting, I'm wondering if I should consider power up to 12 or 14. Here is some other info that may help you help me: 1) I own Vortex Stokes binos - they are nice and I dig the warranty and customer service if they are ever damaged, so I'm open to a Vortex scope. 2) I like the Nikon Monarch, but am not a fan of their BDC reticle, though I could manage with the standard reticle. 3) I don't think I'm really interested in Leupold - some personal reasons involved - long story - but I really like their B&C reticle. 4) I don't think I really want to spend more than twice the money for the Conquest 4.5-14x44 So the big question is whether I'm going to regret not having more power on the pronghorn hunt if I stick with the 3-9 Conquest. If you think more power is a necessity for my Savage, what other scopes would you suggest I consider? Thanks in advance for the help.

If you like the Vortex get this one. http://swfa.com/Vortex-4-12x40-Viper-Rifle-Scope-P10820.aspx Vipers are great scopes.
Optically it will be very close to a Conquest. Plus it gives you a little more mag that might be helpful for those long shots. |

Welcome to the OT Gridlron. I haven't been pronghorn hunting before but am gonna imagine that you'll has something like a spotter for glassing and picking a bull to shot. i believe you'd be fine with the Conquest 3x9 but if you want more magnification (like you mentioned) and don't want a larger investment. I'd look at the Vortex Viper line up.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I've been looking at that particular scope, SVT.
Another question, there is a review on the same scope with the Dead Hold BDC reticle where the reviewer claims the Vortex Viper suffers from tunnel vision. What's this all about?

I like these and I think that for what you are doing I would go with the 4-16x40 Bushnell 4200 the knobs it uses are not quite true target knobs but you can dial in correction for distance with them. To me it makes a lot of sense to give up one power on the low end to gain 7 more on the high end. The rainguard coating on the glass is also a plus but the glass is very good and close to the quality of the Zeiss Conquest but at 499.95 rather than the kind of money asked for a 4.5-14 Conquest however you can get those tricked out with balistic reticles or target knobs for a price.
Just remember that the balistic reticle scopes are only true at one power ususally the max power where dialing in correction works at every power. Also the Super Sniper 3-9 since it is a First Focal Plane scope the mil dots can be used for know hold over marks by running a balistic chart in mils and since it is FFP the hold over will work at every power other scopes wont do that unless they are FFP most of which are very expensive.
http://www.kentonindustries.com/pics/ttctypes/ knobs can be custom engraved like speed dial style so that you just put it on #2 for 200 yds #3 for 300 yds #4 for 400 yds and it corrects for bullet drop.

SVT, similar, but the one I saw was on the sales page for the scope. However, I like this review, and thanks for the links.

I was not aware of those TTC's from Kenton Industries. It looks like they give other scopes the same functionality as the VX-3 CDS. Are those TTC's from Kenton considered to be of good quality?

I really like the the Conquest and it's price point its hard to beat. I also believe 9x is plenty for hunting goats.
