I'm currently deployed in iraq right now, and i have a passion for long distance shooting, varminting, and other ballistic challenges(BUT AM FAIRLY NEW AT IT ALL). im currently without a rig but have in mind everything but the optics. i am goin with the REMMY 700 VLS IN .308,LEUPOLD MARK 4 20 MOA BASE, BURRIS XTR RINGS. I currently have the leupold mark 4 6.5-20x50 lr/t in mind. but reading all the advise from people who have experience with all the products that talk down on the leupolds has got me guessin. any advice would be extremely heplfull. do not be afraid to be critical on all my choices, for i do not want to go wrong with my first rig. again any advise would be helpfull.
thank you!! |

Welcome scarface we are happy you are here, I hope all is well over there, and that home will find you safe very soon.
I would look at the IOR, although there are others that will do as well. Thankyou for your service and be safe sir.

I really like the tmr reticle. but the mil-dot will do the same. will the mark 4 be able to reach out there to 1000yds sufficiently to do the job

It has 90 e and 60 w. I would get a 20 moa base for this reason. it's a good scope though you can get better glass with the IOR, and the MP8 reticle is superb.

God Bless you son .... check out a Burris extreme tactical also . I worry about you guys every darn day . When that war started I wished Bush would send us old boys there instead ... They tell me I'm too old ... but sit me in a sniper position and I can knock the eye out of a rat ..... just what those lousey arabs are ! Remember as most here can tell you ... you can have a $2,000.00 rifle .... but an inferior scope will make it useless .

Thank you for all your support and for the advise. I like the burris extreme tactical. How does it match up with the mark 4. most of the people here say that all leupolds are over priced am i getting the same thing out of the burris but at a cheaper price. I like the MP8 reticle alot, but cant bring myself towards the IOR's.

Hey before I get jumped on again .... I'm not flaming leupolds ... but they ARE overpriced . In my opinion the Burris E-Tactical is a much better deal . Plus you can get the lit rectile in it ... which I have found extremely useful where I use mine . If I were you I'd get my hands on a Burris and see for yourself . Only my opinion and reviews back me up . I've been dropping targets/game for many years and it's that which I base my opinion on . I teach sniper tactics and have had bucu scopes to my eye .... and put many through the tests . Grab a ghillie and join me ...

I 've tried to stay away from the Leupold vs/ everybody else threads, but if you value a solid, dependable and proven scope with some of the best warranty service in the industry, I don't think they are as "overpriced" as some say. There IS somewhat better glass for the money, but glass is NOT everything....

My vote is for Leupold out of those 3.

If the extra bucks is not a problem, go with your gut feeling and buy the Leupold. You will regret not buying what you really wanted.

Burris warranties are FOREVER and super quick return and service if you ever need it .... but they're so darn dependable ... it's hardly ever used . Burris has a new line out ... check them ! You'll find ... more bang for the buck and extreme reliability . Being an old vet ... I would'nt steer you wrong son ....

What is your budget?
What is your intended use? What do you "need"? What do you want? The IOR is a better scope (in my opinion) but the service is sub-par - or can become so ricky tick. The Leupold is a good scope at a not good price, many will disagree; I think there are better deals on better scopes. Don't buy a 24X scope, more magnification isn't always a good thing. I've heard mixed reviews on the Burris but have not used so can't say for certain. For what you have stated above, I would definitely give this a look: http://www.swfa.com/pc-12303-292-ior-4-14x50-tactical-30mm-rifle-scope.aspx (or the 3-18 with large elevation turret.) And, for the record, the only 100% US-made, US-assembled scope on the market is US Optics (which I highly recommend but they ain't cheap) so don't buy Leupold purely because it is "Made in the USA." I aint buyin it just because its "made in the usa". My budget is 1k+, im gunna do everything from deer huntin, varmintin, to punchin paper. i need at least a 3-12 with target turrets and a mil-dot or mil-tac reticle. i think a 24x is to much for me. personally i think a 12x would be perfect for my uses.
