I recently purchased a DPMS sportical w/ a 16in. barrel and a 1:9 twist  my primary use is for coyotes and my yardage is about 200 yrds. will be the longest maybe 300 if I'm lucky. What kind of scope should I put on, I'm looking for a mil dot scope but don't know all the brands out there,  you have any suggestions.  Thanks

Just curious, but why do you want a mil dot if your ranges are going to be a maximum of 300 yards and mostly under 200?  If you zero an AR at 50 yards it is very close to on again at 200 yards.  So you really have no need for a range finding reticle.

Also what is your budget as you can go from $50 to $1500+ real quick.

I never thought of it that way, with the short range anything could work. I guess that i could go with a plex. My budget is $100 to $300.

Ya, if you zero at 50, you will be shooting about .5 inch high at 100, 1 inch low at 200 yards and 3.5 inches low at 300.  With 55gr FMJ bullets.

I just got one of these.  I have not tested it yet, but if it is like other Vortex products it will be a decent piece of gear.

Vortex is the brand name.  They are made in china.  Their better scopes are very comparable to the Bushnell 4200 line.  They also make some very nice bino's.  From what I have used and seen, it is pretty decent stuff.

I actually screwed up on that my mind was thinking both MOA and inches, I was stating part in MOA and part in inches.  Sorry, my bad.  Also I only had the scope 1.5 inches over the bore instead of about 3.  Here are the charts.  YOu can see the advatages of the 50 yard zero for the 300 yard shots.  It is what they call the battle sight zero.  Bascially it makes it so poa equals poi out to 300 yards.  No need for any hold over or under out to that distance.  Makes you a little high at 100 but that is easier to try and adjust for than when shooting at 300.  Just remember for close shots you have to aim high to make up for the difference in the barrel to center line of the sights.

50 yard zero.

Great job on posting the ammo used ... many on here don't inform the posters that different ammo changes the whole ball game of statistics . Very well informed reply my friend ! Excellent

Not all Vortex are made in China....the upper end bins like the Razors are made in Japan...the Viper 30mm scopes are made in the Phillipines...I am using one of each of these and have not been disappointed with the products..

When you are shooting at something as small as a song dog you should use a range finder to pinpoint ref points for quick shots and I like to use something with a little bigger optic like 50mm just because at lower light and a wider view. but it is all on your own prefances ( sorry bad speller )
