First post.  Seems like people have some good knowlege here.  If I could ask a questions of everyone:
I have been thinking about getting a good pair of binos.  All I have right now are a pair of Bushnells that my grandparents bought me in high school, and a cheep pair of small ones I keep in my car.  I have been thinking of getting the Leupold Mojave, the Vortex Vipers or the Zen Ray ED3's.  Now with these Prime HD's, the price of the pre-order being $555, and the Vipers being $600, should I expect the Prime's to be a better glass than the Vipers? If so, it seems a no brainer to get the Primes.  Would you guys suggest I preorder the Primes and then compare them to the Vipers when I get them?  That was kind of what I was thinking of doing but thought I check with some people that knew more about it than me.  Its a concern that there are not any reviews for it, but you kind of have to make a choice know because the $555 is only good until April 15.

If my choice was between the Vipers and the ED3's, which way do you guys think I should go?

Since nobody has seen a Prime HD yet, what ever answer you get is kind of a guess.  I think (maybe hope is the better term) that the Prime will be better than the Viper HD.  I really like the Viper HD, it is a very good glass.  The Viper HD series retained the somewhat narrower fov of the original Viper series, so whatever else, the Prime is going to have a wider fov.  It will also have field flattener lenses.  How the two will skake out side by side is anybody's guess.

Personally, I think the ED 3  (or Vortex Talon HD for that matter) is better than the Viper HD, mostly because think the image is a bit better, certainly wider.  The Viper HD has the edge advantage over the ED 3, but not by much, and even then the size of the sweet spot still goes to the ED 3.

The Leupold Mojave has never impressed me much.  I have a friend who has one and for me, all of the Leupold Green Ring  series binoculars have a tunnel view effect, like looking through a tube with an expansive black border around the edge of the view.  The images are decent enough, just the apparrent fov is lacking.

If you are not where you can look at what you buy at a dealer (which is not much of an option now with Zen Ray), then frankly the best thing to do is to pre order the Prime HD and a Viper HD at the same time and keep the winner, send back the looser.

By, the way, welcome to OT. Big Smile

Well, I ordered the Prime HD's yesterday.  Now, I get to wait until May to get them.  When I get them, I will take them in to the local Wholesale Sports and compare them to the Vortex.  If I'm not keen on them, I'll send them back and order the ED3's and do the same, although from everything said on this board, I imagine I'd be keeping the ED3's.  I would think the Prime's are going to be better than the ED3's, its just the newness, and if there are any little things about them that need improved since its the first offering of them.  I just watched transformers last week, so everytime I type Prime, I can hear Megatron calling Optimus Prime, Prime.

Just out of curiousity, anyone have an opinion of the Scheels Paragon HD?  I had considered those for a short time.

Anyone seen the Prime HD's?  I have been cruising the OT for info on new binos (leaning toward the Talon HD 10x32) and noticed this thread that discussed the ZR Prime HD's.  Well, I went to SWFA and looked and didn't see them, though I did go to ZR's website and there they are.  Anyone seen these yet?  FWIW, my Dad and I did look at the Viper HD's and the Talon HD's side by side at a "big box store," and he really liked the Vipers over the Talons (he's looking at 8x42), but I thought they were really close, liked the ergos of the Talons, and didn't think the Vipers were $150 better, if at all.  Plus, I like the Talon FOV better, especially in the 10x32.  Should I still be waiting on the Prime HD's for comparison?  Thanks.

Thanks for the detailed review and the link, Steve. Any word on when they will be available to your average joe (me)? Sounds like they are the real deal.
Edit: just saw the deal on the website: 592 for the 10x42 preorder. Am I correct to think that these guys will be all over QC on the first run? Sounds like this is the real deal. Would you recommend taking the plunge sight-unseen, and are these noticeably less different than the alphas than the vortex and conquest offerings? Thanks for your patience. I'm much more versed in scope compares. I can't imagine these being worse than the leupy katmai's I've been using for the past 8 years.

They should ship in the first week of July, but probably after the 4th considering it's a Holiday.  I don't think it's a mistake to go sight unseen ...unless... you have small diameter and/or deeper set eyes and a narrower than average seperation of your eyes.  These have a pretty large diameter ocular assemblies to accomodate the eye piece design needed for the flat field.  I pre ordered mine nearly a year ago now.  I have not seen my final sample yet.   They got some final run binoculars they sent out to those early preorders, I let them use my pre ordered first run to fill out pressing needs.  They could have substituted a couple of lens elements and got the first order out earlier.  I don't think anybody would have noticed the difference.  Here I give ZR all of the credit in the world for sticking to their guns.  They had to eat crow a little a time or two, but decided a few red in the face moments were far superior to the word getting around they were corner cutters.  They have their own facility now and QC is high on the list.  There are a couple of eye cup changes on the 10x42 over the advanced beta sample I have as well.

The Primes are stout enough that I would like to deck them out in one of the Leizeinikowski armor patterns and tell people these were one of the new LZNS models and see what the reactions would be.  They are excellent binoculars.  They are superior to any thing Leupold with the exception of the discontinued Gold Rings.  Anybody who holds a new Prime who has had some experience with the GR will note some similarities (this is not however pure design relationship either).
