    Posted: June/27/2010 at 12:29

Hello, I'm new to the forum and have been enjoying the dizzying amount of imformation here. I'm glad to be here and hope to learn a lot!

I recently bought a Leupold VX1 2-7x33 for a CZ 452 16"bbl. The gun will be used primarily to punch holes in paper between 24 (indoors) and beyond up to 100yds (outside).

Question: Did I waste $209.00 on a Leupold VX1 2-7x33. The collective opinion here "seems" to lean toward Weaver or Nikon and I've even read some remarks about the Leupold being, well, less than desireable. Would I be better off with an offering from Redfield, Nikon, another Leupold (perhaps the VXII or VXII, Bushnell 3200 or 4200? Money is no object but I do like to be frugal.

I thought I'd done my homework now I'm not so sure. I'm not a scope expert but I'm not blown away by the optics on ther Leupold. It looks about like my Nikon 4X Prostaff.

The good news is it is unmounted and unfired obviously. the retailer will take it back as long as it's in pristine unused condition.

Again, good to be here!Howdy

Welcome to the OT.Love that length on a .22lr.I believe with that quality rifle you might want to look at Bushnell Elite 4200,Vortex Viper or SWFRA SS 3-9.

I'd take it back if you're able to.Thunbs Up  I made a mistake and bought a VX I before I had read up on them.  I was, fortunately, able to sell it for nearly what I paid for it.  I guess that's one Leupold advantage.

I would want a scope wiht target / tactical knobs to adjust for trajectory.  There are several choices here depending on if the rifle will see any hunting use.
Leupold makes some fixed power target scopes   6x ,   12x ,   25x ,    30x  etc.  I like their FX3 6x42 with the target knobs.   Super Sniper makes some nice scopes also and I highly recommend the 6x or the 10x  old style as the minimum focus on the HD is about 50 yds where the old style will focus down to 10 or 15 yds.
There are other choices all of which are more expensive and the 4200 Bushnells are nice glass so also a possible.

I haven't even shot it yet. I have two standard length CZ Americans, one a 452 lefty and the other a RH 455. Both are excellent shooters. One wears a 4X Nikon Prostaff and the other an older model Swift 4-12x40. Never had a days trouble out of either.

Thanks .... thanks also to stickbow46 and CKK1106. New here so gotta get used to the "quote" button. I looked at the 4200 Elites and they seem to offer a lot in the price range.

Depending on how serious you want to get I recommend either a Weaver V16 4-16x42 or a Weaver V24 6-24x42. The V16 is a good choice if you plant to do any hunting with it. The V24 is a popular choice among rimfire match shooters. I use a V24 with Varmint-Plex reticle on my my favorite custom 10/22 tack driver.

Just a little casual target practice. 10rds at 50m.

The CZ453 Varmint that I sold last years. The scope is a Weaver T24 that now rides on my Anschutz.

Sweet looking tack drivers.... Excellent

I like the idea of a Weaver V16 as the CZ shorty may be used for the occasional Squirrel.

I just returned from the retailer I purchased the Leupy VX1 from and they refunded my money with a smile. Sadly, they don't carry Weaver but I did look through a Bushnell 3200 AO 4-12x40 and was VERY impressed with the clarity and overall feel of the scope....so many great choices out there!

I have had the 6-24x50 Crossfire on an airgun for over a year. It has been reliable and the glass is quite good for the money. The mil-dot has been fairly good in low light pest control, too.

The reviews on SWFA sure seem to agree with you. I'm going one on a Ruger 10/22T matched to a Tapco stock with a Harris 6-9 bipod and use it for punching paper and critters.... I'll post a pic when it's done....... as I guess most folks know, they're on back order so I'll patiently await its arrival  Yippee

Glad I saw this.

Right after this holiday weekend I was going to order the SWFA SS 10x42 HD for use on an FX Independent .22 cal air rifle that I ordered yesterday.

Your comment is the first info I have seen that states that 'the minimum focus on the HD is about 50 yards' and that would not be near enough for my application.

SWFA's advert seems to claim that it focuses down to 10 meters.   I have not been able to find other's comments to confirm yours.

So I am hoping you can confirm the source of your info in this.  Was it direct personal experience, or obtained from a trusted source?   Was it possibly mistaken?   Please expand on your comment.

I mean no offense or disrespect in asking this,  am just trying to confirm the info.

Further looking turned up the info that yours is direct first hand experience.  I saw that yours was among the comments included in SWFA's advertisement.  And I saw a post of yours mentioning that you have the SS10x42HD mounted on a M700 R5 mil spec chambered in .308

Yours only focuses down to ~50 yards, not the ~10 meters implied in SWFA's advertisement?  That would be useful info to add to your comments in the advert.

I'm glad I didn't place the order yet.
