My Nikon Monarch 6.5-20X scope just arrived in the mail and I got a couple surprises. First, the optics are excellent- very bright and clear, and the scope seems very well made. However, the Monarch says "made in the Philippines." I thought the Monarch was made in Japan as it is one of Nikon's higher end scope lines. Does anyone know when they switched production to the Philippines? |

The scopes are assembled in a Nikon owned factory in the Phillipines, but the components are from Japan, is my understanding, Sir.

Hi: Mine has "MADE IN JAPAN" stamped on the bottom of the turret housing. It's a Monarch 3.3-10x44 and my Nikon Tactical has "MADE IN JAPAN" also stamped in the bottom of the turret housing. This is what I expect in Nikon. As soon as I'm not able to buy it that way again, I'll be looking for another brand. I did here that their "Buckmaster" line was made in the Phillipines.

I have a Nikon 3.3-10 x 44 and it's stamped 'made in Japan', but I want to buy a Silver Monarch 3-9x40 for my Mod Seven SS, I went to the store today and the one they have in stock is stamped 'made in Philippines'. So what gives? Anyone have a clue about this?
My 3.3-10x44 isn't old, I bought it last Fall. |

As long as the quality remains consistent it makes little difference to me. I have been very impressed with the quality of the Monarch Gold scopes.

Do you find the optical quality of the Gold superior to the standard 1" tubed Monarch?? |

I find my 2.5-10 X 56mm Monarch Gold to be extremely clear and brighter
than any of my Buckmasters at dust. In normal day light it hard to say
it any better. Very hard to judge quality of scopes in good light with
old eyes.

As well it should. The BM is a great entry level, inexpensive alternative scope, while the Monarch Gold and standard 1" are considered solid mid level choices. |

Well I'm one who does care about the change. I may get over it one day....not sure. Nikon got their good reputation being made in Japan and I do hope they will maintain it. I wonder how many Leupold die-hard customers would continue to buy from them if they started importing all of their scopes from these well known cheap labor countries. How about U.S. Optics...can you just see them trying to pull that off. |

It is funny that you just noticed that nikon is having some of their monarch scopes made in the philippines They have been that way for 5 or 6years now! Quality has gotten better IMO. I have 2 monarch's made in japan and 2 from the philipines and the eye placement is not as critlcal on the ones from the philipines less black outs. They also have added fast focus eye piece's and fingure adjustable turrents. Nikon has a good name and would not put it on the line if they were not 100% confident in their ability to enforce their quality control in the philippines. They still make all their own lenses and coating's in a huge facility in Bangkok. Their scopes have a life time warrenty that I had to use for a pair of bino's and I must saythe service was outstanding! If you are unhappy with fact that nikon has some there scopes made in the philippines then go buy that leupold that is 100% made in the USA. well except for the glass which they have made buy some one else.

I heard that the Buckmasters were made there but was still under the impression that the Monarchs, Monarch Golds, Tacticals were made in Japan. This was one of the reasons I choose them when I did. I just bought my Monarchs this January and the Tactical 14 months ago. They all were marked made in Japan. The Monarchs do have the fast focus eye piece and finger adjustable turrets too. I guess I just lucked out and got some old inventory. As for Leupold....I didn't say I would buy them over the new Monarchs but I'd highly consider the Weaver Grand Slam series and the Elite 4200 series. Both are still made in Japan...at least the last time I checked. When the next generation on Nikons come out....I may see somthing that I have to have. So I may end up with one made in a "cheap labor" country. |
