Super excited about the new Minox. I have not looked at one, but if there is even a modest improvement over the first Gen za 5, they should have a winner.

Given the specs and price, I have a feeling that they have hit the sweet spot once occupied by the conquest.

Although I'm excited about the Minox, as a Meopta fan, I'm disappointed to see that Meopta, seems unprepared to maintain their foothold in the $4-650.00 niche. As others move to 4 and 5x magnification, more compact designs and side focus, Meopta is holding fast, while raising prices.

I agree with both of you, as I am really excited about this new HD 5x offering and price point. I would also love to see a 5x (or even 4x) meopro. This may be my next scope...

All of the new Minox scopes are now made in Asia.

The new ZA5 HD webpage at minox.com states "assembed in USA"...I have no doubt that many components are mfg in asia, but they do state "schott HD glass" (which can be mfg'd in asia as well)...

Here's what you need to understand IMO.  Meopta makes all of it's products in house, including the glass, grinding, polishing, etc....everything.  The only other optics manufacturer I'm aware of that does that is S&B.  All of these other guys import parts, assemble parts, or have some Asian manufacturer complete them to their specs.  Naturally the guy that does the latter can do it at whatever price point they desire by shopping around for the best deal some Jap or Chinese company gives them.  I would take the build quality, glass, and overall package of Meopta any day of the week over companies that outsource their products, especially Minox, Vortex, Nikon, etc.

Not to start a pissing contest but I have been playing with & own the new German made Minox 5Ei 2-10x50,with Illum 4A ret. When I spoke to the rep I was told the 5Ei scope are totally made in house in Germany. The scope says Germany on it & comes in a very nice wooden box,you read correct a WOODEN box.

Been sick last 2 weeks with a bad flew so the only comparison I was able to do is at home!I put it side by side to a S&B also my Hensoldt. Was it as clean no,does it have a little tunneling yes but not as much as my S&B.It is some what softer looking glass but very easy to get behind.Turrets are much better than the Z5's I own.I think Minox has hit a home run with the 5Ei.If I had to compare to a market scope I would say it falls in with the IOR for clarity.

I wish they had put a parralex turret on but I'm told the next 2 scopes with higher mag. coming in will have them. This scope has a very nice feel just like my Euro scopes & I'm glad I had a chance to get one early as I think when the word gets out about how good these scopes are there is going to be a waiting list.

So, JGR, I presume you only have Meopta and S&B scopes then, right?

Good choices, both of them.

JGR, I didnt realize that there was a forum member who was privy to the profit margin that Meopta was working with in the Czech Republic as compared to other companies outsourcing to the Pacific Rim. Sorry, I should have asked.

Being the simple minded person that I am, I was just pointing out that I was disappointed Meopta apparently is not trying to compete with other companies like minox on a specs level. Perhaps, they can't - apparently you already know.

It is just disappointing though, given that Meopta made a name for itself in America by turning out the r1, a phenomenal scope, that competes with the big boys, at a markedly lower price.

As a further indictment of my simple mindedness, I must confess my erroneous suspicion, that the American purchasers of Meopta ltd. might have became short sighted and profit minded to a point that the brand might suffer. Oh well, I've been put straight, I apologize for a small man's musings.

I think you need to lighten up some.  What I posted was not  personal, not by a long shot, and I certainly didn't call you simple minded.  What I was trying to say is that outsourcing ed glass from china (schott has a factory in china IIRC) is probably cheaper than making it yourself, therefore you probably need to charge a higher price.  That's all I was pointing out, and that's the only way Zeiss can "make" a $300 bino with ED glass.  Meopta had contracts to build stuff for several different big name optics companies, among them was Zeiss.  Since that contract expired, Meopta has started to come out with new stuff under their own name.  As a matter of fact they are making the new Nightforce 82mm spotting scope as we speak.

I bought a ZA5 2-10x40 about three years ago and paid $500 for it.  It now sits on my Savage Model 93 .22 Mag.  The tunneling drives me crazy and makes it impossible to find my reticle in near darkness.  To me it does not matter where it was made.  I am sorry that I ever bought it.  I could have bought a Zeiss Conquest for the same money and would have a much better scope!  I sold the Vortex that I had.

I have a ZA 3.  No tunneling.  Nice scope.  I heard that the ZA3 and the ZA5 behaved differently here on this forum.  In that case, I'm glad I got the ZA3.

I never warmed up to the Minox "rolling ball" effect.

Eek  What Minox do you have?  Mine's not doing that....I just checked outside by panning the scope at the countryside ( and buildings and stuff here in the DFW disaster area ).
