I just finished refinishing an old 7400 Remington .308 The stocks, and entire steel works. Whatcha think guys? I also did some custom work on the decorative spacers. I did away with the faux ivory.

Thanks Dog. Polishing the steel was a task. Brandon has seen both of my 4200's. He knows how this one had seen some tough hunting. The other is in near pristine condition. Now this one ranks better, atleast in my eyes. I just can't seem to tackle doing this extensive amount of work on anything that doesn't need it.

Thanks Hunter. It was a task though. Not so much the wood part. It had some moments though. The checkering is tough to get cleaned out without damaging it.

OH MAN!!!!!!! I love the grain on that "ugly one" You could darken that up to bring it out more and she would be a real beauty.

im planning to strip this one down and try to refinish it, ive gotta get my dressers done first. i just picked up 190 lineal ft of maple this morning from the mill. i cut the trees in october and they finally got sawed planed and kiln dried so it will be back to dresser building for a while for me. ive got 2 rem.581's to do as well, i picked them up for $25 each for my boys.

It might have been work, but it looks great now.  If it is worth doing, it is worth doing it right.  Yeah, the job might not go quick, but every time you pick it up you will appreciate the time you did put into it.  Again, very nice.

That is so true. So very true. I figure I put about 50 hours into this one. She was in pretty bad shape cosmetically. Worth it though, she has never once been any sort of a problem. Always a reliable partner.

Looks really good to me. I usually send mine to a professional after I have botched in a do-it-yourself-attempt!
So I can appreciate the skill shown, great!

Those old Remington autoladers were very popular here in the Northwoods in the Sixties and Seventies. Two out of three deer hunters seemed to have one. They developed a bit of a reputation for poor reliability from the guys who never bothered to clean and oil them.
But if cared for they worked fine and were often extremely accurate.

I like them, and yours is one of the nicest looking ones I've seen, Billy!

Your scope is mounted a little too high though!   Mouth Taped Shut

Thanks Ron. You know, I tried mounting the scope a tad lower, and it just wasn't comfortable for me. This gun is my "stalking" gun, and when I have to put it up there fast, with the lower mounts, I couldn't get on target as fast. Now the 30-06 Remmy the Leupold is mounted lower. I used to have the see thru rings on it for stalking prey and iron sight use. I did away with them and the irons on that one as well. I suppose using 50 mm objectives almost exclusively, and also shooting the M-16 has changed where the cheek wield is comfortable for me.
