Has anyone had a chance to do some side-by-side tests with the new Leupold Gold Ring binoculars yet? I've been doing some reading on the birding forums and it seems like you either love 'em or hate 'em. I would like to hear some opinions here.

How do they compare to the Kahles line of bins? Are they as good as the Swaro SLC's? Are they optically close to the big 3 in low-light performance?

What is a BaCD prism thay they're using ? Please elaborate as much on this as possible.

Thanks.

I have not done a side by side comparison with the Kahles.  But, I own the Kahles and I am not about to sell them to buy any GRs.  I was able to compare the GRs directly to the Bushnell Elites and I was very impressed with the Elites.

"...and I was very impressed with the Elites."

That's a very interesting comment.  All I've heard were blog rumors so there's probably multiple distortions in what I'm about to share, but I've found that quite often even the most outrageous rumors have some foundation in a small bit of truth.

With that qualifier, here's the rumor:  When Bushnell lost rights to the B&L brand name they decided to overhaul the Elites to something new--hence the Swaro-styled new Elites.  However, since the old Bausch & Lomb Elite line of binoculars carried such a high reputation for excellence, Bushnell sold the design standards for the optics to both Leupold and Vortex.  The rumor is that both the new Gold Rings and the Vortex Stokes carry the old B&L Elite optics and that's the reason both were introduced as high end binocs at exactly the same time that the old Elites were phased out.

Like I said, it's just weblog rumors and given your opportunity to compare the Gold Rings to the Elites, there's probably no truth to it all, but...

Just my two cents.

For all I know that may be true.  I was comparing them to the new EL type Elites and there were noticeable differences.
