So I recently just purchased a Remington 700 sps tactical in 223.I picked this caliber for the lower cost of ammo and also if my son decides he wants to shoot, the recoil won't be bad. My goals for this rifle is to learn to shoot out to 500 yards. The furthest I have shot is to about 200 yards so 500 is gonna be a stretch for me.
The scope that I am pretty set on getting is the swfa 12x42. My question is will I be able to make out milk jug sized targets out to 500 yards with this scope? Is there a better option in the price range of the swfa? Thanks in advance for your help. |

Welcome to Optics Talk.
I too have a SPS Tac in .223. She's a terrific shooter. I had a 12x SS and I think it will meet or exceed your expectations, though I didn't shoot mine out to 500 yards, so I can't answer your question definitively.

What you see at 500yds with 12x is similar to 42yds without any magnification. I think the SS 12x will be a fine choice.

Thanks for the welcome. I got the rifle new for $370 otd,so I should be in pretty cheap by the time I get my scope. That is good to know about the 12 power Sparky, that definetly makes my decision a lot easier.

Welcome to the OT. I do feel the need to warn you........................be prepared to have a lot of fun!!! You've made two good choices. If your set on shootin out to 500yds. go ahead and start with 62gr. or heavier. I hope you got 1-8 twist but you can do ok with 1-9. Keep up the good work. |

Thanks Sgt D. The barrel is a 1-9 twist. I plan on using 68 grain Hornady ammo until I can get set up reloading. Another question I had on the 12x42 scope is,will each click value on the turret be .36 or will it be different? By the way I am looking at getting the mil/mil version.

My SPS .223 loves 69gr. SMK's and 25 grains of Varget. Win small rifle primers. Shoots lights out, so I'm sure the 68gr Horny will be good to go too. Well, "should be".
