i don't take the Weatherby 300wm out much anymore, it is just unpleasant to shoot repeatedly.
i am currently living in central ohio so there are few places, critters, or needs for this caliber for now. yet i still get it out and punish my shoulder once or twice a year just because i can...

the last time i had it out the glass on it went fubar. i am looking at the falcon menace.

will the menace withstand the recoil of 20-40 rounds per year?

this is used for close varmints, 300-500 yds max, or paper.

mainly just want to keep it viable, it is a nice rifle and my first gun. and i have hopes of returning to montana again where it becomes a more realistic hunting tool than it is here in ohio.

would like to keep the cost on the low side.

suggestions appreciated
rich

What do YOU consider the "low side", Rich? Wink
That term is VERY subjective on this particular forum.

I'd get a Bushnell 4200....good scope for the money and it's recoil tested.

Falcon has had some good reviews on sniper central, but also some "recalls" so to speak.  How much money do you want to put into the scope.  Based on the Falcon, I have some ideas, as well as the upper limit of 500 yards.  The Falcon scopes are more set up as a Tactical scope and if this is not needed, then you may be better suited for a non-tactical scope.  A super sniper 3x9 would suffice, as well as any other 3x9 or 2.5x10 model of good quality in a price range you are willing to accept.  I would recommend a smallish objective, no larger that 40mm, maybe max. at 44mm, despite the present vogue being up to 50 and 56 mm.  While exit pupil increases, depending on the mag., it may exceed your inherent eye's ability to take advantage of it.  One thing, there are tons of options and most are offered on this site at prices that can rarely be beat.  I own several 300s, at all have different scopes for different purposes.  I own many other 300s, other calibers in multiple verses and I try to mix it up just for fun.  Good luck and let us know.  One thing.  I have learned, the guys here know their stuff, but with only one down side.  You will get so many great recommendations your head will spin, but rarely is one off.

Here is a plethora of good scopes.  Owning three Wby 300s, let me give you my bias opinion based on what each one wears and let you choose.:

If you are interested in a tatical scope made in Japan with a low profile objective, this will do 95 percent of the super expensive scopes will do.  Out of your budjet, but a thought.

Another Hawke scope with the computer reticle that can be accesed by their website, as good as the Zeiss system, if not better.  Solid scope with good optics, should handle the recoil, excellent CS, I own about 5, if any problems call Brand Bonnar at the NA distribtion center.

Add Leupold 2.5-8x36 VX-3 Riflescope to Cart
Excellent scope, with excelent optics, should easily withstand the recoil with eye relief extending into the next county.  I own the vx-iii model and could not be much happier on a Remngton 375 RUM, with no eye bumps.  Slightly out of your range, but worth the saving for.

On your cut and paste scopes:
if you delete those three little number links it makes the post look a lot cleaner.

The only problem I have with the 4200 series scopes, is the published eye relief. Esp. on a kicker like a .300 win mag. I haven't used one just going on published info, and others recomendations on this site.

I'm not sure the advertised eye relief would scare me off.  My 4x Pentax is advertised at 3.35in eye relief (the 4200 you picked is 3.3in) and it works very well for me on my .458 Lott and .458 WinMag.  I would say they are HARD kickers compared to a .300WinMag.

I have 4200 Elite's  on a 300 Rem Ultramag . 338 Win Mag, 300 Weatherby MkV, and a 45/70 Marlin...never an issue with eye relief

i'm sure the relief will be fine with the 4200. after all it isn't like it is one of these...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQJSZs-euZU
and i would like to think i could shoot that without falling down.

if martin3175 has a 4200 mounted on all of those and they are holding up i am comfortable that my little rifle will hardly noticeable to one.
