I have an older Ruger tang safety 270 win. that has had a Leupold Vari-X III 40mm on it from mid to late 70's(I think). The setup is good but I would like to put a newer scope on it to use this hunting seasonand l am worried that the eye piece on the newer scopes are not going to clear the bolt, if I dont stick with the Leupold's. Is their a way to measure bolt clearance or is it a trial and error kind of thing. The scopes I am looking at are, of corse the Conquest, Meopta, or Minox. All with fast focus eye pieces. I have nothing but good experence from my Leopolds and have a 2.5-8x36 VXIII waiting if thats all that will fit.

Thanks

I don't think you will have a problem with most scopes.  The Burris FFII  3-9x40 worked fine on my Remington 700 .338 Win Mag, when I used it to replace a Leupold Vari-X III 2.5-8x36.

I suspect you've found the VXIII to be a brighter scope than the older Vari-X version.

While the "fast focus" eyepiece gets different reactions, I've found it to be quite handy.  I wear glasses only part of the time (not when using binoculars, for example), and the focus is different with glasses than without them.  It also solves part of the problem of finding out your glasses are elsewhere when you need them.

Most of the manufacturers will post or provide eyepiece dimensions allowing you to take that into consideration. Obviously, you can go with taller rings but, if you are like me, prefer shorter set-ups. Another choice worth looking at (IMO) would be Sightron Big Sky. They have the typical Leupold lock ring type eyepiece which tends to be a bit smaller than the fast focus types.

I decided to do it trial and error. Ordered a Minox ZA3 off the sample list, if it works great if not I thing I just need a new rifle to put it on. Big Grin Sound like good logic to me!!!!
