A friend of mine has a New England Firearms single barrel 12 gauge. On the barrel it shows the typical 12 gauge marking along with the 3"inch capable designation. However, upon examination, it seems as though 3 1/2 inch 12 gauge rounds chamber just fine, though the firearm doesn't seem to advertise it as being capable. I have little doubt that since this round fits fine it more than likely will fire with no issues, other than busting a few blood vessels in the shoulder, But being on the safe side I'm not going to attempt it. So I was hoping someone here might have some insight in regards to this. Thanks.

The thing you have to remember about shotguns and chamber lengths is the crimped portion of the shell. The chamber has to be long enough for the crimp to unfold when fired, therefore a longer shell will fit in the chamber.  It is not a good idea to use the longer shells, because there may not be enough length in the chamber for the crimp to unfold and this will cause an increase in chamber preassures when that extra long shell is fired. It could get ugly.

As much as I would like to fire the 3 1/2 inch rounds out of it, I think I'll play it safe and stick to the 3 inch rounds. Admittley, I don't shoot much, but these single barrell 12 gauges weigh next to nothing and kick like an absolute mule, the 3 1/2 rounds would take that recoil up a notch for sure. Thanks for the response.
