Received one of these new 2005 models today from Bushnell for review (thanks Laura!), and upon initial inspection I was welcomed with the usual bright, crisp, and crystal clear view that I've come to expect from their Elite line of scopes.  While I had originally been interested in this particular model for my 17HMR, the layout of the reticle may dictate otherwise.

The Ballistic reticle has four subtensions, each spaced at 3 minute increments (3, 6, 9, and 12 M.O.A. @ 100yds).  Additionally, eash subtension extends 3 minutes on either side of the verticle crosshair (subtension 1 = 6 MOA total width, subtension 2 = 12MOA total width, etc).

Unfotunately, given the trajectory of the 17HMR round, this spacing of the subtensions is going to necessitate the need to calculate what subtension to use at what magnification power to find the best combination for common yardages (150, 200, 250, 300, & 350yds).  Now if I can just remember how to do the math.

Anyway, I just thought those of you who had been waiting on more information on this scope would appriciate the information on the reticle since Bushnell hasn't put a lot of details out on this model or the reticle itself.

Well, I got the math worked out and verified the numbers at the range today.  While I was initially skeptical as to whether this reticle design would work with the 17HMR, I'm more than satisfied with the numbers I came up with.  To keep things simple, I have limited myself to 3 magnification settings, and thus 3 different yardages for each subtension based upon which magnification setting is used.  Below are the charts for those who may be interested.

Ranges for 12x Magnification:
Crosshair = 100yds (zero distance)
Subtension 1 = 180yds
Subtension 2 = 230yds
Subtension 3 = 270yds
Subtension 4 = 305yds
*Subtensions are spaced 3 MOA apart at this magnification*

Ranges for 9x Magnification:
Crosshair = 100yds (zero distance)
Subtension 1 = 200yds
Subtension 2 = 260yds
Subtension 3 = 305yds
Subtension 4 = 345yds
*Subtensions are spaced 4 MOA apart at this magnification*

Ranges for 6x Magnification:
Crosshair = 100yds (zero distance)
Subtension 1 = 230yds
Subtension 2 = 305yds
Subtension 3 = 360yds
Subtension 4 = 410yds
*Subtensions are spaced 6 MOA apart at this magnification*

Thanks for the info. I will probably limit my shots to about 250 yards though.

Here is a mock up of the reticle being discussed.
