I'm just glad that Ted finally has a practical bolt action rifle he can use for huntingDevil

Looks nice Ted! Any particular reason you angled for the 120gr vs. 140gr? Like the camo pattern too. At first glance it made me go hmm, but I think it was the color of the bench that caused that reaction. When looking at the camo against the turf, I like it!

Hornady discontinued the 140s. Plus, would have to seat bullets too deep to function in mag box length.

Fight the seating issue with a few of my Rugers too.

Didn't want to try the 140gr ELD's or you are sticking with "Don't fix what isn't broke" in the A-Max's?

Yes, absolutely, I do plan to try several of the new ELD-X bullets and am very excited about them -- specifically the 143gr 6.5, 162 & 175gr 7mm's, and the 200 & 220gr .308.

If these bullets live up to their hype, they may very well become my go-to bullet for everything.

I might be able to make the 143 ELD work in my rifle, but it may take up too much powder space when seated deep enough to work in the mag box . We shall see.

Since they just became available very recently, I just haven't had a chance to try them yet. Rest assured that's on the agenda, though.Big Grin

SST's shoot so well in my 6.5 I'm going to have to kill something other than paper to make me switch to ELD's.😎😎😎

So Ted, you have politely said "patience". Gotcha. Been eyeing the 6.5s and was curious.

The ELD-X bullets look interesting. I saw a show last fall that talked about the development of the ELD-X bullets and the problems they had to over come.

The story of ELD-X development has been told so many times in so many magazines and shows that, by now, i am convinced that it's nothing more than advertising hype. Hornady tells the story as if they made a huge break through in bullet technology.   It is not, Doppler radar or no Doppler radar involved.

The ELD-X bullet have three features:
1. They are very aerodynamic and have a high ballistic coefficient. This can be designed by a reasonably good undergraduate student in an engineering school.
2.They have a plastic tip that does not melt when exposed to heat generated by friction with air at high velocity.  This is only relevant past 400 yards, a distance irrelevant to most hunters. It has also been solved many decades ago by Remington and Winchester with bronze, aluminum, or brass tipped bullets.
3. It has an internal step  or crimp inside the copper jacket, to keep lead core and jacket together after the initial expansion of the tip. This has been around for 40-50 years  found in many other bullets, such as the Remington core-lockt.
No  leap forward technology, here. Just hype and advertising meant to feed into the long range fancy  of those who think that they need to shoot a deer from half a mile away.
I shoot and hunt with Hornady bullets, they are accurate, reasonably priced, and kill well. It's the "here's a bullet so you can shoot an elk from a mile" message that i find wrong.
