Hi everyone, I recently purchase my first centerfire rifle, a Tikka T3 hunter.  I am on the search for a inexpensive scope ($150 or less) to use with the factory rings provided.  I will be using the rifle to plink with, maybe some informal target shooting, and possibly for prairie dog hunts.

In searching SWFA, and the forums, I have come upon the following:

BSA Sweet 223 6-18X40 (like the idea and the price, but not sure of quality)
Hawke Frontier 2.5-10X44 (same as Sightron I, but lower cost)
Vortex 6-24X50 (not sure I want a 50mm objective and dont like that it is backordered)
Weaver 40/44
Redfield 3-9X40 (upper range of cost, does it have enough magnification)

Any thoughts on these scopes, or others that i should be considering?

Thanks for your help, this newbie greatly appreciates it!

I used the BSA sweet 223 for about a month. OK but severe lacking in glass.  BC turrets only get you close and were not on for me.

the backordered Vortex is your best bet of the ones you listed if you ask me.

Thanks for your input.  What about something like the Pentax Pioneers?

Gotta go with SVT on this one. Wait on the Vortex. Unless you live south of the Rio Grande the weather is too crappy to do much but wait anyway. "got 2 on back-order myself"

I've got a Bushnell XLT DOA 4-12x40 and they run about $150.  So far its been a really good scope for the money.  I also have a couple of Bushnell Trophies (3-9x40) and they've been really good for me too...each cost about $100.

If your using the Tikka rings will that be high enough for a 50mm plus diameter?  I cant recall on my tikka T3 varmint, but dont think I had much clearance with 40mm, in fact couldnt put caps on it if I recall correct, but that was a varmint barrel too.

http://swfa.com/Redfield-4-12x40-Revolution-Rifle-Scope-P44472.aspx might be above your money, but a decent scope for your gun. You have a nice gun it and you deserve decent glass.....Stay away from BSA http://swfa.com/Mueller-45-14x40-APV-Riflescope-P9136.aspx a less expensive scope that has been getting good reviews

I put a BSA on one of my AR15's just to see if it would last, and after 3yrs it is still going strong. That said, you get what you pay for and the optic quality of the BSA is near the bottom, but it worked well for up to 200-250yrd shots. Maybe I just got a good one!!!

Mueller makes a decent lower priced scope also.
