I'm in the process of building another AR, this time a lightweight 20" build, revolving around the Faxon Arms 20" Gunner barrel, and 2A Balios Lite receiver set.
I've got the 2.5-10 FFP Viper PST sitting on my Thompson and I love it! I'd be happy with a magnification around sitting around that. Again, I'm looking for lightweight, but I can sacrifice some weight for higher end glass. It'll just be used for range time for the most part, shooting from a shaded rest, out to between 100 to 400 yards. I also HUGELY prefer ffp. I guess my budget is sitting at about 1k or less, but I can get some dealer pricing on Burris and Sig scopes, and some Bushnell, Nikon, Trijicon, and Leupold. I've been thinking about: SS HD 3-9 w/ Mil Quad reticle Another Vortex 2.5-10 ffp Sig Tango 4 1-4x either in mil or horseshoe reticle Burris Veracity 2-10 I don't have experience with the SS HD, but I do have the SS 3-15, and find that scope to be exceptional as well. I'm not really certain what the glass on the Burris or Sig is like, but like I said, I get dealer pricing on those.

If you get good pricing on Burris, XTR II 2-10x42 is a very nice scope and should fall within your budget.
If all you are doing is range shooting, most of the differences between PST, SS and XTR II come down to reticle choice and which turrets you prefer. The Burris has a good zerostop, which helps. SS does not have any parallax correction, but for your distances it is not a major problem. All three track well in my experience. ILya |

I would think with a light receiver and barrel, the SS 3-9 is going to let you squeeze just about as much out of an AR as you'd ever need. As Ilya said, any of your choices are fine and boil down to personal preference.

Somewhat related to this, and not to start any flame wars, but is it worth getting the matched upper/lower billet set, or is a billet lower with a tension screw get me most of the way the way there, in terms of accuracy?

In my experience, AR accuracy is more a function of barrel than tension screws. Then again, I am not a fan of considering an AR a precision platform.

I built two guns with the same model WOA barrels. One had high end billet upper and lower set and expensive bolt group. The other was all milspec. Shooting same ammo they both shot 1/2" groups at 100 yards with my hand loads. So in my sample in made no noticable difference.

Recievers do nothing more than hold the parts together. You are paying for the look. Unless you are getting features over and above GI pattern recievers i.e. side charger ect.
