OK, let's say that someone was considering a "tactical" scope, but that could also work for a hunting scope.

Let's say this scope was a 3-10x44

How would you describe the advantages of those numbers vs. a higher mag, or higher obj. lens?

If you had to pick a "best" mag range and obj. size, what would it be and why?

Most people say tactical scopes are not designed for hunting when in fact they are designed to hunt the most dangerous predator on earth (man).

Most of my rifles have fixed 10x scopes sititing on them, only (1) has an variable 3.5x10x40, (most of the time its on 10x also.) I'm so used to the 10x that I have no trouble aquiring targets, tracking moving targets, hunting with it (fast moving targets or even if the target is up close).

Larger objective lenses will increase some light transmission but they mainly increase the moa of adjustment for the optic. I like to keep my scope as close to the bore as possible. Most of my scopes are only 40mm. I usually run 20 moa Badger bases so I can get extra range adjustment.

A 3x10x44 should be more than adequate to hunt or shoot in excess of 800 yds with proper set up. Just buy a durable, user friendly, and repeatable scope and you will be fine.

If you want to make this a tactical/hunting scope I wouldn't go with the mil dot reticle. If it was a true tactical setup then yeah get the mil dot reticle. Since it wont be used exclusively for the tactical purpose it's not really needed. The 3-10x44 wont have the higher powers that you see on most tactical setups. It does have the lower magnification you want for hunting purposes. It does have up to 10X which will be sufficient out to 1000 yards. Extreme magnification really isn't needed to make solid hits at long range, and since this will be a hunting scope as well. A 3-10X44 would be perfect. A larger objective wont increase the moa. That is effected by the tube size. It will have to sit up higher on your rifle, and it may take more adjustments to sight it in. All things being equal a 40 and a 50 will have the same amount of moa. It will let in more light which will in affect increase the exit pupil size. I'm sure you have read all the discussion about that subject here. Trying to get everything a tactical scope and a hunting scope has to offer in one scope is almost impossible. Think of which you would do more of.... hunting situations or tactical intentions. Then consider the aspects you like or need most out of each and center you decision around those.
